Trainee Machinist/Fabricator

Key Responsibilities

  • Be able and confident to interpret and follow technical drawings and templates.
  • Be able and confident to select the correct timber for the task and calculate the quantity required.
  • Use computer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and computer numerical control (CNC) software.
  • Prepare and operate woodworking machinery.
  • Assemble precut wooden parts to build trusses, wall sections and similar supports.
  • Move specified precut parts to the work area and position parts in a jig by hand or using the overhead winch.
  • Place metal reinforcement plates over connecting joints and secure parts using a hammer, screwdriver or pneumatic staple gun.
  • Verify dimensions of precut parts and accuracy of assembly using rulers and gauges.
  • Maintain machinery to a high standard and ensure all health and safety procedures are followed.
  • Meet production schedules and complete tasks assigned by the Manager.
  • Process and prioritize orders in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with other departments to schedule task completion, deliveries and redeliveries.
  • Develop knowledge of all product ranges and refer customers to specialist staff where appropriate.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with team members, decorators, architects and contractors.
  • Research and follow industry developments, best practice and relevant technical information.
  • Escalate critical issues to management when necessary.
  • Undertake training as required by the business.
  • Absorb and support regular sequential stock counts and annual stock takes.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Mill and EcoHomes departments.
  • Support the Timber and Boards team when required.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties requested by the Manager to support departmental and business objectives.

Essential Skills And Knowledge

  • Previous experience operating cutting machinery or similar equipment.
  • Well organised with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritise workloads and work effectively under pressure.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team.
  • Professional and courteous manner at all times.
  • Understanding of and commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of business and customer information.

Desirable Skills And Knowledge

  • Basic mechanical knowledge.
  • Timber product knowledge.
  • Familiarity with customer service practices.
