Traffic Systems Technician 1/Trainee 2/Trainee 1 - (NY HELPS) (Region 8)

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, test, modify, adjust, overhaul, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of electrical systems, electronic, magnetic devices, and computerized equipment used to monitor and control traffic signal systems and ITS devices.
• Perform major system modifications, such as traffic signal system integration and system networking.
• Review, modify, and prepare documents defining the operations design and construction of traffic signal systems and ITS devices.
• Stand-by and overtime availability required; respond after hours for service and repair callouts.

Requirements

This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Candidates must meet one of the following qualifications:

Traffic Systems Technician Trainee 1

• 30 college semester credit hours, including at least 9 in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, electrical technology, computer technology, automotive technology, electrical construction and maintenance, electronic technology, HVAC, overhead electric line worker, or network technology; or
• One year of experience assisting in the installation, repair, or maintenance of traffic signal equipment and/or intelligent transportation systems; commercial, industrial, or military electronic/electrical integrated system components; telecommunication/network cable systems; or machinist trade work; or
• Military training in an electronics field, including completion of an electronic/electrical school program; or
• Graduation from a high school trades program, BOCES program, or accredited U.S. trade school with a technical program in electricity/electronics, heavy equipment operation maintenance and repair, machining, entertainment technology, diesel technology, HVAC/R, network technology, automotive technology, or construction trades; or
• Completion of a Union Applied Skills Trades program in electricity.

Traffic Systems Technician Trainee 2

• 60 college semester credit hours, including at least 15 in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, electrical technology, computer technology, automotive technology, electrical construction and maintenance, electronic technology, HVAC, overhead electric line worker, or network technology; or
• Two years of experience assisting in the installation, repair, or maintenance of traffic signal equipment and/or intelligent transportation systems; commercial, industrial, or military electronic/electrical integrated system components; telecommunication/network cable systems; or machinist trade work; or
• Military training in an electronics field, including completion of an electronic/electrical school program, and one year of the experience described above; or
• Graduation from a high school trades program, BOCES program, or accredited U.S. trade school with a technical program in electricity/electronics, heavy equipment operation maintenance and repair, machining, entertainment technology, diesel technology, HVAC/R, network technology, automotive technology, or construction trades, and one year of the experience described above; or
• Completion of a Union Applied Skills Trades program in electricity and one year of the experience described above.

Traffic Systems Technician 1

• 60 college semester credit hours, including at least 15 in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, electrical technology, computer technology, automotive technology, electrical construction and maintenance, electronic technology, HVAC, overhead electric line worker, or network technology, and one year of the experience described below; or
• Three years of experience assisting in the installation, repair, or maintenance of traffic signal equipment and/or intelligent transportation systems; commercial, industrial, or military electronic/electrical integrated system components; telecommunication/network cable systems; or machinist trade work; or
• Military training in an electronics field, including completion of an electronic/electrical school program, and two years of the experience described above; or
• Graduation from a high school trades program, BOCES program, or accredited U.S. trade school with a technical program in electricity/electronics, heavy equipment operation maintenance and repair, machining, entertainment technology, diesel technology, HVAC/R, network technology, automotive technology, or construction trades, and two years of the experience described above; or
• Completion of a Union Applied Skills Trades program in electricity and two years of the experience described above.

Upon successful completion of 12 months as a Traffic Systems Technician Trainee 1, you will automatically advance to Traffic Systems Technician Trainee 2. Upon successful completion of 12 months as a Traffic Systems Technician Trainee 2, you will automatically advance to Traffic Systems Technician 1.

Additional Requirements

• Within three months of appointment, obtain and maintain a valid NYS Class B CDL Permit. Failure to do so will result in termination.
• Within twelve months of appointment, obtain and maintain a valid NYS Class B CDL license with no air brake restriction. Failure to do so will result in termination.
• Pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination and drug test prior to beginning employment.
• Cannabis use is not permitted and will be tested for during pre-employment screening, potentially disqualifying candidates or resulting in removal from employment.
• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
• Educational credentials must be awarded by an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education-recognized agency. If awarded outside the U.S., independent verification of equivalency is required.

Pay

The salary range reflects the full range for this graded position. New State employees appointed into graded positions receive the hiring rate (beginning of the salary range).
