Traffic Systems Specialist IV Lead (Traffic Maintenance Crew Chief)

Performs specialized and complex electrical/electronic technical work related to traffic management/control systems, communication, illumination, or traffic data collection devices/systems. Serves as a lead worker for technical employees engaged in developing, installing, testing, programming, and repairing electrical/electronic devices/systems. Work may require working in heavy traffic and extensive statewide travel. Requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives.

Responsibilities

• Organizes the workforce in response to emergency situations.
• Coordinates and assists in overseeing the installation and repairs of infrastructure equipment.
• Serves as a lead worker by:
  • Acting as a resource for complex questions.
  • Presenting workflow and operational updates to supervisors/managers.
  • Providing input on team members’ career conversations.
  • Approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage.
• Conducts new installation field site layouts prior to construction.
• Ensures preventive maintenance is conducted.
• Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains hardware and software related to traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems, land mobile radio communication systems, or the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System.
• Performs complex electronic repairs, rewires systems, adjusts and reprograms equipment/systems, and replaces controllers and other electronic devices.
• Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting, or traffic data collection equipment.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent in general high school studies.
• 5 years of experience in construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical work, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, or traffic systems maintenance. (Experience can be full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.)
• Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
• Valid driver’s license (required to drive a state vehicle).

Skills

• Extensive knowledge of:
  • Electrical inspection standards, codes, and procedures.
  • Electrical construction procedures.
  • Electrical/electronic troubleshooting and repair techniques.
• Considerable knowledge of traffic engineering terminology and fundamentals.
• Proficient skill in:
  • Maintaining effective working relationships with others.
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to extreme cold and heat (below 32°F and/or above 100°F for more than one hour).
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
• Prolonged periods of standing.

Conditions of Employment

• This position has been identified as physically demanding and requires a pre-employment physical.
• Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
• This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
• Selected incumbent must maintain the security or integrity of the agency’s critical infrastructure and will be subject to regular assessments of criminal history and/or reviewed for connections to foreign adversaries.

About the Role

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Houston District is seeking an experienced and motivated Traffic Maintenance Crew Chief to join the Traffic Systems Maintenance Office. This position serves as a lead worker responsible for coordinating and performing the maintenance and repair of traffic signals, roadway illumination, flashing beacons, and other traffic system assets across the Houston District. The Crew Chief provides day-to-day leadership for a field crew, helping plan work activities, coordinate personnel and resources, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with TxDOT standards.
