About the role

TxDOT's Wichita Falls District is seeking a Traffic Systems Specialist I in the Traffic Signals Department located in Nocona. This position assists in the repair and troubleshooting of traffic signals, illumination, and other electrical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and interprets schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Consults with Department personnel, manufacturers, and/or vendors regarding equipment operation, design, installation, equipment failure, complex repairs, or replacement recommendations.
  • Drives/operates a bucket truck to install and repair electronic traffic control devices at various heights.
  • Follows applicable safety procedures when working in areas where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines, water and sewage lines, and heavy traffic are located.
  • Maintains stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, equipment, products, and materials are available for scheduled projects.
  • Maintains clear work zones and ensures that construction work sites are cleaned at job completion.
  • Monitors and maintains clear work zones and ensures that traffic control measures are operating effectively.
  • Operates and maintains complex electronic test equipment to repair and test electronic traffic systems.
  • Performs complex electronic repairs and rewires systems; adjusts and reprograms equipment/systems and replaces controllers and other electronic devices.
  • Responds to complaints and identifies problems regarding traffic signal timing, congestion, operations, and assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
  • Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting, or traffic data collection equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Duties for Traffic Systems Technician II

  • Assists in developing strategic plans to meet core business needs.
  • Assists in monitoring the proper disposition and replacement of equipment.
  • Captures preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Inventories supplies and equipment in shop.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience: 2 years experience in construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Commercial driver’s license.

Competencies

  • Considerable knowledge of: Industry guidelines, specifications, and codes in the production and use of technical plans for the development and delivery of products and services.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Fundamentals of electrical/electronics and design procedures.
  • Electrical/electronic troubleshooting and repair techniques.
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes.
  • Proficient skill in: Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Ability to: Follow applicable safety standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time.
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position.
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment.
