The City reserves the right to underfill this position as a "Trainee" if a qualified applicant is not found. The trainee's starting salary may be up to 15% less than the posted range, and trainee status will remain until the incumbent completes a structured training plan and meets all job classification requirements within one year of appointment.

About the role

Join Team Yuma as a Traffic Technician in the Public Works Department. This role involves the maintenance and operation of traffic signals and streetlights, performing skilled electrical work in design, construction, operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, streetlights, public works electrical equipment, communications equipment, and signing and striping. Positions require standby and emergency call duty.

Responsibilities

  • Installs and repairs traffic signal hardware, cables, antennas, controllers, cabinets, and roadway lighting.
  • Inspects and maintains traffic signal hardware, new construction sites, roadway lighting, and vehicle detection installations.
  • Assists in the installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of miscellaneous electrical equipment and/or public works projects with other City departments.
  • Fabricates hardware for traffic signals and signs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and inspection of traffic signal hardware and public works electrical equipment.
  • Programs traffic signal controllers and malfunction management units.
  • Assists with blue stake marking and setup of traffic control zones at construction sites to minimize risk of accidents and enhance safety of work crews.
  • Manages inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Responds to questions from residents and provides information and customer service.
  • Adheres to safety procedures in work areas and promotes a culture of safety.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Two years' experience in electronic and electrical components; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Electrical Public Works experience preferred.
  • Valid Arizona State Driver's License is required.
  • Valid Arizona State Class A Commercial Driver’s License and an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal and Roadway Lighting Technician certification are required within twelve (12) months of hire.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Methods, procedures, materials, equipment, and tools used for installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control signals and related devices.
  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) standards, protocols, specifications, and guidelines.
  • OSHA safety rules and regulations, and safety standards in hazardous traffic environments.
  • Basics of Internet Protocol (IP) and National Electrical Code.
  • Traffic laws and rules, and techniques of traffic control.
  • City geography, traffic patterns, and the location of streets, landmarks, and buildings.

Skill in:

  • Operating equipment used in the installation, testing, and maintenance of public works electrical systems.
  • Operating specialized equipment used in the fabrication of traffic signs.
  • Reading and understanding plans, specifications, and schematics.
  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of trucks and equipment.
  • Following safe work practices.
  • Maintaining records and files.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Work is performed in a standard office environment and at job sites throughout the City. May require bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting objects. Exposure to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment is possible. Physical dexterity is required to work in confined spaces and use precision tools and equipment. Requires vision capacity to perform fine calibrations and distinguish between colored wires.

  • Sick Leave: 40 hours added annually after 90 days of employment.
  • Paid Parental Leave: Up to 4 weeks of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child.
  • Holidays: 12 recognized holidays per year with 8 hours of pay per holiday.
