About the role
The City of Allen is seeking two Traffic Signal Technicians to join its team. This position is part of a concurrent recruitment for a Senior Signal Technician position. Applicants should review both postings and apply to the one that best aligns with their experience and interests.
Responsibilities
- Maintains traffic control equipment by running tests to ensure correct operation, performing preventative maintenance on signal hardware, troubleshooting and repairing traffic signal problems, installing new traffic signals, assisting with programming and modifying signal-timing plans, changing out controllers and implementing needed software.
- Maintains school zone flashers by ensuring correct operation, maintaining knowledge of flasher assembly, installation and operation, programming clocks with school meeting times, running tests on flasher equipment and conducting regular inspection of school zone flashers.
- Performs traffic studies by providing hand held traffic counts for phase time studies and by placing and securing moveable counting units at different locations.
- Maintains residential roadway lighting by troubleshooting and repairing lighting systems.
- Provides City signage services by fabricating street name signs, installing signs and using sign machine and computer to create signs.
- Maintains safe work environments for City workers by setting out warning signs, safety cones and barricades, accounting for flow and density of traffic and by routing traffic with arrow boards.
- Provides administrative support by processing work orders, maintaining work logs and on-call status, supervising work activities, coordinating the message board and radar trailer placement and by providing preventative maintenance on aerial lift trucks and other City vehicles.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent plus one (1) year of relevant signal experience.
- Valid Class C Driver's License.
- International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician 1 Certification preferred.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of traffic signal operations, components, and hardware.
- Preventative maintenance procedures for traffic control systems.
- School zone flasher assembly, programming, and operation.
- Traffic study methods, including manual counts and movable counting units.
- Residential roadway lighting systems and troubleshooting techniques.
- Sign fabrication methods, materials, and sign machine/computer software.
- Work zone safety practices, traffic routing, and proper use of cones, barricades, and arrow boards.
- Basic electrical and mechanical principles related to traffic equipment.
- City maintenance procedures, recordkeeping, and work order systems.
- Safe operation and maintenance of aerial lift trucks and City vehicles.
Skills
- Installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing traffic signals.
- Programming signal controllers, software updates, and timing plan modifications.
- Inspecting, programming, and maintaining school zone flashers.
- Conducting traffic counts and placing/counting equipment accurately.
- Diagnosing and repairing residential street lighting issues.
- Fabricating and installing signs using sign-making equipment and computer software.
- Establishing safe work zones and directing traffic safely and efficiently.
- Maintaining precise work logs, documentation, and administrative records.
- Operating specialized equipment, including lift trucks, arrow boards, and radar trailers.
- Communicating professionally with City staff, contractors, and the public.

Pay
This position pays $21.74 - $26.63 hourly or $21.74 - $31.52 full salary range.
Schedule
This is a full-time role (40 hours/week).
