About the role

The Trades Maintenance Specialist I position within the Facilities Management Department at Pima County is responsible for performing skilled analysis, repair, and maintenance of equipment, systems, and vehicles. This role involves leading, participating, or operating independently in providing journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, trouble-shooting, construction, fabrication, and preventive maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled analysis, repair, and maintenance of equipment, systems, and vehicles;
  • Led fabrication and modifications of equipment, systems, and facilities based on verbal instructions, sketches, or technical drawings;
  • Inspects, services, and maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles;
  • Conducts quality-control analysis on equipment and systems, implementing necessary corrective actions for optimal performance;
  • Maintains detailed records of activity, operations, service, and usage for equipment, vehicles, and systems;
  • Prepares oral and written activity reports and estimates for complex operations, maintenance, and special projects;
  • Prepares sketches and drawings to communicate work plans to supervisors, subordinates, and contractors;
  • Covers coordination of activities with other units, agencies, or contractors to ensure efficient resource use and minimize disruptions;
  • Monitors contractor performance, including goods and services provided;
  • Manages the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with safety protocols;
  • Ensures the use of safety and personal protective equipment and implements work-site traffic control procedures;
  • Oversees the maintenance and care of turf grasses, trees, and ornamental shrubs, including pest control, fertilization, and addressing plant health issues.

Requirements

  • Two years journey-level experience in building maintenance, plumbing, HVAC or electrical;
  • Or two years of experience with Pima County in a Trades Maintenance Apprentice or closely-related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum three (3) years experience in general building maintenance: Repairing or replacing commercial/institutional-grade plumbing, electrical, and HVAC equipment and fixtures. Troubleshooting various building hardware and specialty equipment. Evaporative cooling tower maintenance. Utilizing power tools and drain cleaning equipment. Knowledge of PPE and safety protocols.
  • Experience with/knowledge of repairing or replacing commercial/institutional-grade plumbing fixtures to include faucets, sinks, water closets, flushometers, urinals and waterless units. Reading and interpreting rough drawings and mechanical blueprints.
  • Experience with/knowledge of troubleshooting and repairing air handling equipment: bearings, shafts, fans, pulleys, dampers, belts, chilled and hot water coils. Experience performing filter changes, lubricate, inspect, and document HVAC and chilled water equipment. Experience calibrating or replacing pneumatic and low voltage thermostats.
  • Experience servicing and repairing commercial lighting fixtures, light controls, switches, and receptacles. Experience troubleshooting electrical motors and motor control centers. Experience replacing a variety of electrical motors and associated components. Experience with lock out tag out compliance procedures and understand electrical schematics. Experience using and understanding voltage and amperage meters.
