Trades Generalist – Downstate

About the Role

Trades Generalists perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in the mechanical, building, motor equipment, and electrical trades. They are supervised by higher-level trades positions and may be required to work from rough sketches or oral instructions. While work priorities, materials, and detailed plans are generally provided, incumbents are expected to work with considerable independence. Trades Generalists may also supervise subordinate maintenance staff by making assignments, giving instructions, and inspecting work to ensure quality.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled and semiskilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks across multiple trades (mechanical, building, motor equipment, electrical).
  • Work from detailed plans, diagrams, specifications, rough sketches, or oral instructions.
  • Operate with independence typical of a skilled tradesperson, with periodic inspections by supervisors.
  • Supervise subordinate maintenance staff by assigning tasks, providing instructions, and inspecting work for quality.

Qualifications

Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson, providing training equivalent to an apprenticeship or technical program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training (e.g., completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services).

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle type.

Pay

Starting salary: $54,425 (includes $50,425 statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 + $4,000 Downstate adjustment). Job rate: $61,548 (includes Downstate adjustment).
