About the Role

A Trades Generalist performs journey-level work in one trade, and skilled and semi-skilled level work in a combination of other trades for the repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment. Incumbents may supervise others in maintenance, repair, installation, and construction activities.

Trades Generalists are assigned either to a small State facility as the only journey-level maintenance position or to settings requiring flexibility in maintenance programs. They may work alongside individuals classified in specific trades and plan and lay out construction, repair, and maintenance projects.

The role involves performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks across mechanical, building, motor equipment, and electrical trades.

Responsibilities

  • Perform journey-level work in one trade and skilled/semi-skilled work in other trades for repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Supervise maintenance, repair, installation, and construction activities as needed.
  • Plan and lay out construction, repair, and maintenance projects.
  • Execute a variety of maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks across mechanical, building, motor equipment, and electrical trades.

Requirements

Non-competitive: 4 years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson, providing training equivalent to an apprenticeship or technical program; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training from technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle type.

Qualifications

Individuals certified eligible for the 55 B/C program under the Governor's Program to Hire Persons/Veterans with Disabilities (Section 55 B/C of the Civil Service Law) will also be considered. Candidates must provide a copy of their letter of eligibility.
