Position Summary
The Tractor Operator operates a diesel or gasoline powered tractor and associated equipment to perform grounds maintenance operations including cutting grass in landscaped and non-landscaped areas of commercial and public grounds. This job class requires practical skill and knowledge of grounds keeping practices, equipment, and using safe work practices.
Typical Duties
- Operates a tractor to move materials, draw implements, tow trailers, and pull objects embedded in ground;
- Pull cable of winch to raise, lower, or load heavy material or equipment;
- Fasten attachments such as graders, plows, rollers, mowers, backhoes, seeders or disc harrows to tractor;
- Maintains and reviews equipment, structures, materials, events, and environment to detect and assess problems;
- Adheres to procedures, regulations and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks;
- Performs minor repairs to tractor and attachments;
- Inspects tractors and equipment per company requirements to ensure proper operation and safe condition;
- Performs grounds maintenance laborer duties when required;
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- One or more years of experience in operating tractors or similar heavy equipment;
- Ability to follow verbal and written directions and instructions;
- Ability to follow established safety rules applicable to tractor operators, to maintain a safe environment, and to adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions and use the appropriate PPE;
- Flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities, and to build effective working relationships with coworkers and customers;
- Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving and common sense skills.
Physical Requirements
- Maneuvering over uneven ground;
- Maneuvering in, around, and on equipment;
- Climbing and working from high platforms;
- Reaching, pushing, and pulling gears to operate levers, and steering wheel;
- Bending, stooping, and reaching;
- Lifting or moving tools, equipment and/or materials up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
- Performing at a customer’s location on job sites in a construction environment with various tools, and mechanical, electrical and construction equipment;
- Transporting to work locations within the site;
- At times, may be required to work in confined spaces;
- Exposure to hazardous equipment, toxic substances, noise from equipment, and depending on external weather conditions, wind, rain, cold, and heat;
- Travel between facilities and work locations may be required.
