This role supervises a shop or group performing day-to-day maintenance tasks on assigned rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, equipment, and machinery under an RDT&E program. The position applies professional technical expertise and guidance to solve complex problems by interpreting technical data such as blueprints or manufacturers’ manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and supervises activities of personnel, determining and directing specific work assignments.
  • Assists in the operations of the maintenance departments per the COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series.
  • Ensures full and effective employment of assigned personnel.
  • Ensures all work is scheduled and performed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Responsible for compliance of special programs as assigned.
  • Ensures direct reports are fully compliant with all approved procedures.
  • Ensures all direct reports and maintenance employees receive job and safety training.
  • Identifies material and special tooling needs to accomplish daily work assignments.
  • Provides employees with proper training on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Provides technical training and assistance as needed.
  • May lead and direct a group of two or more individuals.
  • Complies with all current sections of COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series applicable to aircraft maintenance and ALSS.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of technical publications, NAMP, and NALCOMIS aircraft maintenance applications.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school degree or equivalent required; Associate's degree or trade license preferred.
  • Six years of experience in the aircraft maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of aircraft maintenance on the following T/M/S is preferred: F/A-18F, T-38, T-6, AT-6, NU-1B, U-6, and X-26.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense Secret level clearance.
  • Valid US State driver's license; ability to obtain a government flight line driver’s license.
  • Full knowledge of COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series and the RDT&E community.
  • Knowledge of military publications, drawings, blueprints, microfilm, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Working knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to read and interpret data, including micrometer readings and small scales.
  • Ability to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depth.

Skills

  • Knowledge of safe working techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to plan and schedule maintenance work requirements.
  • Working technical knowledge of aircraft, machinery, facilities, and equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude to offer technical direction in all maintenance areas.
  • Ability to interact effectively with personnel at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in using a computer.

Physical Requirements & Working Environment

  • May work in an aircraft maintenance hangar or outside.
  • May be required to respond to operational circumstances including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure.
  • May be exposed to extreme noise from turbine and jet engine aircraft.
  • May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or electrical shock hazards; may work near moving mechanical parts, vehicles, or aircraft.
  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.
  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp, or handle objects; use finger dexterity; bend elbow/knee; and reach above/below shoulders.
  • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to see aircraft in flight, read dials/gauges, identify small objects, and use hand tools.
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, forklifts, APUs, etc.

Travel

May vary by location. Up to 10% of the year.

Pay

USD 105,000 to 115,000 (Maryland Salary Range). The successful candidate’s starting pay will be based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. The provided salary range minimum and maximum values correspond to variances between regional/geographic locations across the United States.
