Overview
At Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, we coordinate organ and tissue donation in the northern three-quarters of Illinois and northwest Indiana. Our mission is to save and enhance lives through donation, providing compassionate service and supporting families and hospitals.
Responsibilities
- Advance Gift of Hope's mission and values
- Adhere to policies and procedures
- Use surgical instruments to recover authorized donor tissue
- Participate in all aspects of tissue recovery
- Provide post-mortem care and close incisions
- Verify donor identification and authorization
- Package and ship tissue
- Assist with physical assessments and collect donor blood samples
- Act as a preceptor to new employees
- Attend organizational events
Qualifications
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-P), EMT-B, Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), or Registered Tissue Recovery Technician (ORT)
- High school diploma/GED with 6 months tissue banking experience or 18 months of related experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field with anatomy lab experience
- Experience maintaining aseptic technique and using surgical instruments
- Ability to recover all donor tissues proficiently once trained
- History of low error rate and low tissue contamination
- Basic computer skills
Physical Demands
- Ability to drive personal car to hospitals and other locations
- Work outside normal business hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Walk, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel to perform job functions
- Work 12- to 24-hour shifts, as dictated by organizational needs
- Use personal cell phone for business purposes
- Stand for up to 6 consecutive hours to complete a case
- Move up to 50-75 lbs. and move donors with assistance
- Use fine motor skills to package and label recovered tissue
- Work in various environments including operating rooms, coroner and medical examiner offices, and hospitals
- Travel within Gift of Hope’s service area
- Respond to notifications via smartphone
- Attend organizational and departmental meetings and training sessions
