The Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) prepares trade-bound students to meet the skilled workforce needs through exemplary trade and academic programming.

About the role

The CTECS Mathematics Department provides a standards-based curriculum designed to support diverse student goals while addressing learning gaps and promoting academic growth. Students must complete a minimum of three mathematics credits to meet graduation requirements. CTECS offers multiple mathematics pathways:

  • Graduation and Career Pathway – Focuses on essential mathematical knowledge and skills applicable to the workplace and everyday life. Students typically complete Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, with elective options such as Personal Finance with Algebra and Mathematical Applications.
  • College-Preparatory Pathway – Designed for students planning post-secondary education, offering advanced courses such as Statistics, Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus.
  • Honors Pathway – The most rigorous program, including Honors Algebra I, Honors Geometry, Honors Algebra II, Honors Statistics, Honors Trigonometry, Honors Pre-Calculus, and Calculus for highly motivated students.

Through these pathways, the department ensures all students receive the mathematical knowledge and skills necessary to achieve their career, technical, and post-secondary goals.

Responsibilities

Planning and Preparation

  • Develop lesson plans with clear objectives, appropriate techniques, and differentiation to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of high school Mathematics content and pedagogy.
  • Understand and address the varied needs of each student.
  • Collaborate with guidance personnel and support service educators to implement IEP and 504 accommodations/modifications.
  • Set instructional goals and outcomes.
  • Utilize varied instructional practices and resources.
  • Design effective instructional learning opportunities and assessments.

Classroom Environment

  • Develop mutual respect and rapport with students.
  • Establish a culture for learning.
  • Manage classroom procedures and student behavior positively.
  • Organize physical space to maximize learning opportunities.

Instruction

  • Communicate effectively with students.
  • Use questioning and discussion techniques to engage students.
  • Keep students intellectually engaged.
  • Follow the scope and sequence of the approved CTECS instructional program and curriculum.
  • Design instruction to meet the needs of all students through individual and small group settings.
  • Utilize assessments to design clear and specific learning tasks.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Reflect on teaching practices.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Communicate effectively with students and families.
  • Participate in building and district-level professional development and collaboration.
  • Engage in professional communities and demonstrate growth in professional craft.
  • Adhere to professionalism and state ethical standards.

Requirements

  • Must hold a 029 Mathematics, 4-12 endorsement. Verify credentials here.
  • List earned credits and degrees from accredited institutions accurately on your application.
  • For foreign institutions, provide documentation from a recognized USA accrediting service for equivalency.

Pay

Salary follows the VS02 scale, derived from the State Vocational Federation of Teachers.

Schedule

  • First shift, full time (35 hours per week), Monday through Friday.
  • Ten-month academic calendar (188 days per year).

Location: Ella T. Grasso Technical High School (Groton, CT).
