Therapeutic Radiologic Technologists (Radiation Oncology Service)

Summary

Therapeutic Radiologic Technologists (TRT) deliver prescribed high doses of therapeutic radiation for the purpose of treating cancer and abnormal cell growths. They assist in tumor localization, participate in treatment planning, and deliver radiation as prescribed by radiation oncologists. The area of consideration will be prioritized as follows: current permanent other Federal Agency employees, veterans, and then the public.

Functions

- Performs procedures for consultation, simulation, treatment planning, and treatment delivery. - Keeps detailed and accurate daily records of technical, legal, and statistical components of treatment. - Schedules treatments to optimize linear accelerator usage while accommodating emergency times. - Delivers prescribed therapeutic radiation for cancer and abnormal growths. - Takes patient identification photos and sets up tattoos. - Takes SSD readings and obtains isocenter verification films. - Performs port film imaging as needed. - Documents all changes in patient charts and observes their condition daily. - Recognizes and provides emotional and psychosocial support to patients. - Refer patients to departmental staff and other healthcare professionals as necessary. - Reinforces radiation oncologist’s recommendations regarding activities, diet, and treatment of reactions. - Performs quality control measurements of treatment machines. - Identifies patients by required identification protocols before each simulation and treatment. - Communicates with medical staff on other floors/units for quality patient care. - Enters pertinent daily information into patient’s CPRS/VISTA. - Maintains detailed and accurate daily records of treatment. - Practices radiation safety protocols to limit exposure. - Performs daylight film processor procedures and ensures the processor operates optimally. - Maintains treatment rooms and equipment in a clean, neat, and safe condition. - Notifies supervisor/physics staff about treatment equipment issues. - Reports all environmental and equipment problems to the proper authorities. - Notifies physicians if issues impact patient care and/or treatment. - Performs emergency treatments during clinic hours and after hours, weekends, and holidays. - Works with Radiation Oncologists, Dosimetrists, nursing, and clerical staff to develop teamwork. - Continually updates knowledge of radiation therapy and maintains licensing and continuing education requirements. - Operates and performs Quality Assurance on linear accelerators and CBCT and Exact Couch equipment. - Provides accurate and compassionate treatment and acts as a supportive caregiver. - Follows established safety practices and reports unsafe conditions, injuries, or practices to facility director or administrative service manager. - Participates in reviewing, revising, or authoring policies and procedures. - Performs accurate charge capture, documentation, and CPT codes. - Operates and performs Quality Assurance on linear accelerators. - BLS certification for Healthcare Providers.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. Basic Requirements include a certificate or an associate's degree in therapeutic radiologic technology, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, and certification in therapeutic radiologic technology by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy (ARRT (T)). Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities include independent performance of machine procedures, patient chart reviews, CT simulations, and LINAC On Board Imaging system interpretation. Employees at this level serve as advanced staff TRTs, performing procedures that exceed the full performance level, including emergency on-call treatments and performing CT simulations, troubleshooting, and assisting patients. Physical Requirements include light lifting, use of fingers, both hands, walking, standing, bending, and ability to distinguish.
