The City of Torrance is recruiting for a THEATER TECHNICIAN to join the Cultural Arts Center Theater Team!
The Department
- Provides quality services that support City departments in a manner which enable them to carry-out their community missions and provides these services in a cost-effective and efficient manner, which best serves the operational needs of City departments and the community.
- Includes: Airport Administration, Building Maintenance, Central Services, Cultural Arts Center Administration, Custodial, Fleet Services, Graffiti Abatement Program, HVAC / Electrical, and Warehouse.
The Division
- Includes: Toyota Meeting Hall, Torino Festival Plaza, Ken Miller Assembly Room, Ken Miller Auditorium, James R. Armstrong Theatre, George Nakano Theatre, Pine Wind Japanese Garden, garden rooms, and Torrance Art Museum.
- Houses: 4 dance studios with sprung hardwood floors, a large ceramics facility, a jewelry making studio, 3 art-making studios, and a music/drama room.
The Position
- Under direction from the Stage Manager, the Theater Technician plans, organizes, and performs technical support activities for the Cultural Arts Center;
- Assists in the safe operation and maintenance of theater sound, lighting, rigging, and related equipment and systems used in support of stage productions and related events;
- Ensures the safe technical operations of the Cultural Arts Center;
- Operates and maintains equipment, materials, tools and supplies used in technical production and set design;
- Evaluates equipment needs and notifies supervisor of need to repair or replace equipment;
- Troubleshoots theater equipment.
Qualification Guidelines
- Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying.
- A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in Theatrical Production, and/or one to three years of experience in the professional field, including lighting, audio, carpentry, and running crew.
- A systems-rigging certification is preferred.
- Essential duties of this classification are primarily performed in a dynamic theater environment. Duties may include operations in other Torrance Cultural Arts Center facilities and/or off-site locations.
- Position requires availability to work irregular hours or shifts, weekends, holidays, or overtime as required.
