The Key Changes You Need To Make To Your Annual Kick-Off Meeting
By Ashley Welch and Justin Jones
About the role
As Sales and Sales Enablement leaders plan their annual sales kick-off meetings, this role focuses on reimagining the event from a customer-centric perspective to create a more impactful and engaging experience. The goal is to move beyond traditional logistics and inspire teams by integrating customer insights and innovative approaches.
Key Ideas for a Customer-Centric Kick-Off
-
Strategic Account Planning:
Rethink strategic accounts by including both "Extremes and Mainstreams." Mainstream customers are your larger accounts, while Extreme customers are those doing the most interesting things with your products or services. Invite them to participate in a customer panel to discuss their strategic use of your offerings.
-
Invite Customers to Recognize Top Performers:
Have customers of your top performers speak about their experiences and even present awards. This provides meaningful recognition and reinforces the value of customer relationships.
-
Spur Innovation with Analogous Situations:
Use analogs—examples from unrelated industries or contexts—to inspire creative problem-solving. For example, a team struggling with customer engagement visited a high-end restaurant to learn how chefs and staff maintain motivation and connection despite working "behind the scenes."
-
Product and Marketing Updates:
Bridge the gap between product developers, marketers, and sales teams by involving customers in discussions about new offerings. Use kick-off time to pilot conversations with Extreme and Mainstream customers, gathering real-time feedback to refine products and messaging.
-
Skill-Building:
Enhance sales skills by sending teams into the field to observe customer engagement in retail environments. Pair salespeople to visit high-end and low-end stores within the same vertical (e.g., Toys R Us and Build-a-Bear) and analyze what drives or hinders customer engagement. This exercise provides fresh insights applicable to their own customer relationships.
Planning your kick-off from the customer’s perspective can simplify the process, inspire your team, and lead to highly productive outcomes for the year ahead.
