Test Supervisor
About The Role
The Testing Supervisor is responsible for leading all electrical and functional testing operations within the manufacturing facility. This role ensures that electrical equipment and assemblies meet engineering specifications, customer requirements, and applicable industry standards prior to shipment. The Testing Supervisor oversees testing technicians, ensures safe execution of high-voltage testing procedures, drives continuous improvement in testing processes, and partners closely with Engineering, Production, and Quality to resolve technical issues and improve product performance. This position plays a critical role in ensuring product reliability, safety, and compliance in a fast-paced electrical manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Development: Supervise, train, and mentor a team of electrical testing technicians. Assign daily testing schedules aligned with production and shipment deadlines. Provide technical guidance on troubleshooting and failure analysis. Conduct performance evaluations and support skill development and cross-training. Foster a strong safety culture, particularly around energized equipment and high-voltage testing.
- Electrical & Functional Testing Oversight: Oversee functional, electrical, and performance testing of products such as switchgear, panelboards, control panels, PDUs, transformers, or other power distribution equipment. Ensure testing is conducted per engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and customer specifications. Verify completion of: continuity and insulation resistance testing, Hi-Pot (high potential) testing, functional load testing, relay and control verification, power-up and system validation testing. Review and approve test documentation and quality records prior to product release. Ensure accurate recording of test results and traceability of all units.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to electrical safety standards (NFPA 70E, OSHA requirements, lockout/tagout procedures). Ensure compliance with applicable standards such as UL, ANSI, NEMA, IEEE, or customer-specific requirements. Maintain proper PPE usage and safe energized work practices. Support internal and external quality audits.
- Quality & Continuous Improvement: Lead root cause analysis for test failures and non-conformances. Collaborate with Engineering to implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). Identify recurring failure trends and drive process improvements. Monitor KPIs including first-pass yield, test cycle time, rework rates, and on-time shipment performance. Implement Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives within testing operations.
- Equipment & Facility Management: Ensure all test benches, load banks, meters, and high-voltage equipment are calibrated and maintained. Coordinate preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of test equipment. Evaluate and recommend automation or process enhancements to increase throughput. Maintain organized and compliant testing areas.
