About the role

The Test Engineer interfaces with Project Management, Application Development, and leadership to ensure all testing work items are delivered with quality, free of critical defects, on schedule, and with accuracy. This role involves planning and executing testing for systems and applications, collaborating on test plans, test case creation, and execution.

Responsibilities

  • Level I:
    • Develop and maintain business domain expertise for a given Product Family to assist in designing and creating testing scope and test plans.
    • Analyze requirements and technical specifications to build test cases and create or find appropriate test data.
    • Conduct test case reviews with the agile team to ensure proper coverage of requirements.
    • Document, administer, and execute manual and automated test cases, procedures, and scripts per the test scope/plan.
    • Collaborate with Test Automation Engineers to define automation aspects and provide test cases for automation.
    • Record and communicate test results accurately to agile teams, stakeholders, and management.
    • Create and monitor defects, providing detailed recreation steps and relevant information.
    • Attend agile meetings and collaborate with the team to meet sprint and milestone goals.
    • Raise risks or issues proactively to maintain transparency and help resolve them.
  • Level II (in addition to Level I):
    • Recommend productivity and process improvements.
    • Scope and plan all testing efforts, managing multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Stay current on new tools and technologies to identify improvement opportunities.
    • Mentor less experienced testers in business knowledge and testing techniques.
  • Level III (in addition to Level II):
    • Implement productivity and process improvements, such as advanced testing techniques and metric tracking.
    • Act as a subject matter expert in testing methodologies.
    • Develop, define, and implement test standards and guidelines.
  • Level IV (in addition to Level III):
    • Lead and own testing strategies, scope, and plans for multiple projects within a product family portfolio.
    • Define types of testing, review test environment dependencies, and coordinate testing across teams.
    • Ensure test cases are properly written, structured, and updated per agile standards.
    • Attend core team meetings to provide testing progress updates and risk mitigation information.
    • Act as a representative for the testing organization, resolving barriers to testing progress.
    • Onboard new testers, familiarizing them with tasks, responsibilities, and tools.
  • Level V (in addition to Level IV):
    • Review quality metrics dashboards and follow up with teams on findings.
    • Collaborate with automation engineers to review test automation implementation for coverage, quality, and stability.
    • Monitor and track third-party issues requiring resolution outside the agile team’s scope.
    • Coordinate UAT test cycles across agile teams.
    • Ensure accurate and timely delivery of test reporting metrics, including test artifacts and bug reports.
    • Lead a testing/quality community of practice within a product family.
    • Recommend test solutions and strategies to senior management and the architecture council.

Qualifications

  • All Levels:
    • Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field. In lieu of a degree, three (3) cumulative years of related technical or domain experience is required.
    • Basic knowledge of testing methodologies (black box, white box, regression, etc.), business requirements, use cases, databases, APIs, mobile, windows, and web applications.
    • Familiarity with test cases, procedures, and scripts.
  • Level II (in addition to Level I):
    • Three (3) years of related work experience.
    • Experience working directly with business users.
    • Experience with functional, integration, system, load, and performance testing.
    • Experience with iterative, waterfall, and agile methodologies.
    • Ability to execute and administer test automation.
    • Ability to work on complex projects and multiple testing efforts concurrently.
    • Understanding of complex data-driven test scenarios, workflow testing, user stories, and behavior-driven development.
  • Level III (in addition to Level II):
    • Six (6) years of related work experience.
    • Ability to manage large and/or multiple project testing efforts simultaneously.
    • Demonstrated ability to identify root cause problems and determine innovative solutions.
  • Level IV (in addition to Level III):
    • Eight (8) years of related work experience. A combination of experience, advanced degree, or certifications may be considered.
    • Demonstrated experience leading a scrum team to improve software testing methodologies, technologies, and techniques.
    • Practical knowledge of all phases of the SDLC.
    • Working knowledge of automated, load, and performance testing.
    • Experience creating and updating onboarding documentation, testing processes, and procedure documents.
  • Level V (in addition to Level IV):
    • Ten (10) years of related work experience. A combination of experience, advanced degree, or certifications may be considered.
    • Demonstrated experience leading multiple scrum teams to improve software testing methodologies, technologies, and techniques.
    • Experience compiling and reporting test results, metrics, and issues to senior management.
    • Experience working with automation development engineers to ensure requirements coverage and automation test quality.
    • Experience working with third-party vendors to track and resolve issues.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a traditional office environment under fluorescent lighting.
  • Must be able to orally communicate and function while sitting at a desk using a computer, keyboard, and mouse for three (3) or more hours at a time.
  • Ability to travel across the enterprise.
  • Ability to work in a home office for extended periods for business continuity.

Pay

Compensation ranges by level:

  • Level I: $60,410 – $84,000
  • Level II: $60,410 – $106,929
  • Level III: $71,880 – $129,384
  • Level IV: $87,766 – $157,978
  • Level V: $98,297 – $176,935

Actual salary will vary based on factors such as budget, experience, knowledge, skills, education, and internal equity.
