On-siteEngineering$45–$50/hrContract

About the role

This role focuses on testing, systems engineering, and vehicle integration for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) electronic control units (ECUs) and advanced driving control units (ADCUs) for North American vehicle applications. The Test Engineer analyzes existing systems, develops and updates requirements and specifications, supports validation and verification, and collaborates closely with global engineering teams and suppliers to ensure ADAS ECUs meet functional, safety, and compliance requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform ADAS ECU systems engineering activities with a primary focus on change point analysis for North American vehicle integration.
  • Analyze systems developed overseas to determine which functions and components remain unchanged and which must be updated for North American applications.
  • Coordinate closely with engineering teams in Japan and cross-functional stakeholders in the United States to understand change impacts and integration constraints.
  • Develop and update system requirements, CAN communication specifications, diagnostic requirements, and failure detection specifications for ADAS ECUs and ADCUs.
  • Own and execute gap analyses, documenting findings and updates using Excel, PowerPoint, PDFs, and internal CAN and change point tools.
  • Create supplier-ready requirements and specifications for ADAS ECUs and related systems, ensuring clarity and completeness for external development teams.
  • Track supplier software deliveries, monitor progress against schedules, and ensure alignment with submitted requirements and project milestones.
  • Support validation and verification activities once software is returned from suppliers, including test planning, execution, and results analysis.
  • Develop validation test plans for bench and vehicle environments, execute selected bench and vehicle tests, and coordinate vehicle testing activities with technicians.
  • Analyze test results, make preliminary technical judgments, and present findings and recommendations for evaluator or stakeholder approval.
  • Support bench and automated testing using Vector tools and VT System benches to validate CAN communication, diagnostics, and failure detection functions.
  • Participate in system verification events, MARU Q milestones, and other formal review activities to confirm readiness and compliance at each project phase.
  • Provide project execution support by maintaining schedule awareness, preparing for milestones, delivering status updates, and creating or updating review documentation.
  • Support both ADAS ECU and ADCU platforms, including systems that receive inputs from sensors, cameras, radar, CAN, and Ethernet networks.
  • Contribute to the development and validation of ADAS functions such as Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and P-ADAS features like Active Lane Change Assist with steering intervention.
  • Support advanced autonomous driving functionality on ADCU platforms, including systems such as autopilot features, parking sensors, and automated parking.
  • Collaborate with design and integration teams to ensure proper ECU placement and harness routing within vehicles for optimal performance and serviceability.
  • Adapt ECUs for North American vehicle applications through extensive vehicle integration activities, including model-specific configuration and calibration support.
  • Create and analyze system and ECU requirements to ensure that model-specific compliance and conformity requirements are met.
  • Work with base software components such as failure detection, over-the-air (OTA) update capabilities, and cybersecurity functionality for ADAS ECUs and ADCUs.
  • Support technical activities related to ECU hardware, connectors, and electrical characteristics to ensure robust system integration.
  • Participate in and support vibration testing, temperature validation, and electrical testing to confirm ECU durability and performance under various operating conditions.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of automotive systems engineering experience supporting ADAS, ECU, FICU, or similar embedded automotive systems.
  • Experience working across the V-model lifecycle, including requirements definition, specification development, and validation activities.
  • Strong background in requirements development, gap analysis, and change point evaluation for automotive electronic systems.
  • Hands-on experience with bench testing and/or vehicle testing environments for validation and verification of ECU functions.
  • Familiarity with Vector tools such as CANoe, CANalyzer, and VT System for validation, testing, and CAN communication analysis.
  • Experience with ADAS ECU systems, with a focus on systems engineering rather than algorithm development.
  • Knowledge of basic software (BSW) components and their role in ECU functionality.
  • Experience with diagnostics and failure detection strategies for automotive ECUs.
  • Understanding of CAN communication and specifications for automotive networks.
  • Experience with ECU validation and system integration in production or pre-production vehicle programs.
  • Ability to work effectively with global engineering teams, particularly counterparts based in Japan.
  • Strong documentation skills for creating clear requirements, specifications, reports, and presentations.
  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting test results, performing gap analyses, and making preliminary technical judgments.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders, suppliers, and technicians.
