Test and Repair Technician

About the role

The Test and Repair Technician ensures the reliability of Coda Octopus Engineering-designed rugged, embedded, electronic boards and systems through test, analysis, troubleshooting, modification, and repair. This role encompasses both hardware and software design platforms. Close cooperation is required with Engineering and Operations to ensure test processes and procedures are followed.

The Test and Repair Technician provides Systems Engineering and Integration support for range instrumentation systems including telemetry, command control, radar, communications, embedded computing, and associated systems. The role involves interpreting test requirements and documented procedures, collecting and analyzing test failure data, and conducting inspections, testing, verification, and system validation. The technician will also participate in environmental, qualification, reliability, and first-article testing.

The Test and Repair Technician must identify and articulate issues with returned systems to generate proposals for fixes. Familiarity with standard electronic test equipment—such as lab power supplies, multimeters, and oscilloscopes—is required. The role includes introducing and influencing process improvements and acting as an agent for organizational test change.

The technician identifies functional problems, suggests and implements corrective actions, and assists in internal quality control standards and the maintenance of reliability programs. The role may also involve repairing and assembling rugged embedded systems and electronic board assemblies, including:

• Prepping circuit card assemblies (CCA)
• Soldering hand-placed SMT and thru-hole parts using a microscope (parts as small as 0402)
• Touch-up CCAs, including installing wire jumpers
• Reworking (R&R) CCAs and other assemblies
• Routing and tying wires to form wire harnesses used in electrical and electronic equipment or systems

Responsibilities

• Interpret test requirements and documented procedures
• Collect and analyze test failure data
• Conduct inspections, testing, verification, and system validation
• Participate in environmental, qualification, reliability, and first-article testing
• Identify and articulate issues with returned systems to generate repair proposals
• Use standard electronic test equipment (e.g., lab power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes)
• Introduce and influence process improvements for organizational test change
• Identify functional problems and implement corrective actions
• Assist in internal quality control and reliability program maintenance
• Repair and assemble rugged embedded systems and electronic board assemblies
• Work to schematics, process instructions, test instructions, and engineering drawings
• Design and author test documentation
• Diagnose systems that have failed internal testing or are returned from the field
• Inspect others’ work per J-STD-001 Class 3 standards

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED and at least 5 years of related experience
• Technical college degree preferred
• Ability to perform job duties with little to no assistance
• Experience working to schematics, process instructions, test instructions, and engineering drawings
• Experience with test process development, test case design, test procedure development, test execution, system evaluation, test reporting, and repair diagnostics
• Understanding of basic test methodologies and processes
• Capability to design and author test documentation
• Ability to diagnose systems that have failed internal testing or are returned from the field
• Capability to pass the IPC610 / J-STD-001 Class 3 Certified Application Specialist course and inspection against these standards
• Current J-STD-001 Class 3 or IPC-610 Class 3 certification is a plus
• Ability to work on Export-controlled and ITAR assemblies and obtain a US Security Clearance if required
• Self-motivated and comfortable working in a fast-paced engineering environment
