About the role

The University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Biology invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position. The department seeks scholars working broadly in cell biology and/or physiology whose research addresses the development and function of organisms, with particular interest in the cellular basis of physiological function, cellular responses to environmental stresses, and the cell biology of organisms in natural or human‑altered settings. Candidates whose work links cellular mechanisms to physiology, organismal development, and broader ecological or evolutionary processes are especially encouraged. The search is open to any experimental system. The department fosters a collaborative, interactive community with research strengths spanning molecular and cellular biology, structural biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, and mathematical and computational biology. It maintains an integrated research and educational program across the basic biological sciences and emphasizes “Life in its Natural Context.” Situated within the School of Arts & Sciences on Penn’s contiguous green urban campus in Philadelphia, the department benefits from close proximity to resources in Engineering & Applied Sciences, Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine, and from university‑wide support offices such as the Vice Provost for Faculty, Vice Provost for Research, the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Innovation, the Penn Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, and Wellness at Penn. Review of applications will begin October 15, 2026 and continue until the position is filled; the appointment is expected to start July 1, 2027.
