About the role

The Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Mathematics, beginning September 2027. We seek candidates with research expertise in applied mathematics, including but not limited to methods in machine learning, artificial intelligence, optimization, operations research, or numerical methods.

Responsibilities include teaching introductory-level undergraduate courses and upper-level courses for math majors, such as MATH 230 (Introduction to Applied Mathematics) and/or MATH 316 (Applied Math and Modeling), as well as other courses aligned with the candidate’s expertise and departmental needs. The standard teaching load is three courses (12 credits) per semester, typically with two distinct preparations. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and maintain an active research program, with encouragement and support for research involving undergraduate students. Additional duties include advising students and participating in service activities.

About the Department of Mathematics

The 19-member Department of Mathematics offers Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees in mathematics and mathematics education and is active in undergraduate research. The department also hosts interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science programs in Actuarial Science and Statistics (in collaboration with the Department of Computer and Data Science). The Center for Applied Mathematics, located within the department, supports faculty and student research in mathematics and its applications. The University provides competitive research grants through the Center for Faculty Development to support faculty at all career stages.

Requirements

• Ph.D. (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in mathematics or a closely related field. Candidates nearing completion of their dissertation (ABD) may be considered for an initial appointment at the rank of instructor.
