About the role

The County of Riverside's Human Resources Temporary Assignment Program (TAP) is seeking a Temporary Lifeguard to support Lake Cahuilla Park in La Quinta. The Lifeguard, under general supervision, will safeguard the general public by performing lifeguard services over an assigned beach or swimming pool facility, and perform other related work as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Safeguard the general public by performing lifeguard services for an assigned pool or beach area; make rescues, administer first aid, and perform manual and mechanical resuscitation.
• Advise about and enforce regulations concerning swimming areas and beach/pool facilities.
• Make periodic patrols of swimming areas, warning bathers of unsafe conditions; post appropriate warning flags and informational signs; operate patrol boat as needed.
• Maintain lifeguard station and equipment in neat and orderly condition; perform other park maintenance work as necessary.
• Enforce pool regulations and water safety policies, ensuring subordinate staff also enforces these regulations.

Schedule

Varies based on pool operation. Normal days will be Monday–Thursday, but may vary depending on events, department needs, and parking operating hours.

About TAP

The Temporary Assignment Program (TAP) recruits and hires temporary employees for all County departments. TAP assignments are a great way to learn about working for the County while working on a temporary, at-will basis.

Requirements

• Knowledge of lifesaving techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, water safety, and use and care of lifesaving equipment.
• Ability to perform swimming rescues in various water conditions and tread water for extended periods.
• Ability to respond effectively and maturely in emergency and stress situations.
• Ability to evaluate swimming conditions relative to public safety.
• Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with individuals and groups.
• Ability to sit and stand for long periods in adverse weather conditions, particularly heat and wind.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Qualifications

• Possession of valid certificates: Lifeguarding (including First Aid) issued by the American Red Cross (ARC), and CPR for the Professional Rescuer (ARC) or American Heart Association CPR equivalent (annual certification required), and California Administrative Code, Title 22, First Aid for Public Safety Personnel.
• Possession of a valid California Driver License may be required in some positions.
