TEMPORARY Lead & NON Lead Watercraft Inspector & Decontaminator – Cortez Point of Entry

About the role

This is a temporary position (9 months or less) paying $18.00 - $19.00 per hour. Employment starts 03/01/2026 through 10/31/2026. This posting is for both Lead and Non Lead Inspector positions.

Responsibilities

• Perform boat inspector and decontaminator responsibilities according to state regulations and standard protocols at Cortez Port of Entry.
• Provide public outreach on the aquatic invasive species topic by providing printed material to those visiting or returning to Colorado.
• Work either independently or in pairs to inspect boats entering the State of Colorado with respect to invasive species such as zebra/quagga mussels.
• Lead Inspector: Provide on-the-job training to inspection staff, create schedules, ensure all shifts are covered, collect and verify accurate timekeeping records, maintain inventory of required supplies, and assist with interviewing candidates for employment.
• Lead Inspector: Resolve challenges with staff and customers, ensure inspection station staff follow standardized protocols, ensure data entry is accurate and complete, perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on power washer/decontamination unit, and provide public outreach on aquatic invasive species.

Requirements

• Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma, good driving record, ability to work weekends, early mornings, and late evenings, excellent customer service experience, reliable and timely, ability to self-motivate and work independently.
• Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with boats, trailers, power washers, small engines, and/or heavy equipment, experience with Microsoft Word applications.

Qualifications

• For Lead Position: Must be 21 years of age or older.
• For Non-Lead Position: Must be 16 years of age or older.

Skills

• Written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience performing boat inspections and decontaminations.
• Experience working with the public in a customer service related field.
