Multiple temporary, unclassified positions (not to exceed 1,000 hours) are available for the winter season 2026-2027 in Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Shelby counties.

About the role

The Ohio Department of Transportation District 7 is seeking Winter Seasonal Highway Technicians to operate equipment related to snow and ice removal, roadway maintenance, and emergency response. These roles focus on making Ohio roads safer for the public.

Responsibilities

  • Operate basic equipment for snow and ice removal, roadway maintenance, and fleet readiness inspections (pre/post trip), including washing equipment.
  • Perform emergency response, clean-up, and traffic control.
  • Conduct general facilities maintenance.
  • Perform seasonal highway maintenance duties, including:
    • Constructing, improving, maintaining, repairing, and cleaning highways, roadways, and right-of-ways.
    • Excavating and grading ditches, digging channels, and cleaning waterways.
    • Cutting brush, grass, and other vegetation; applying chemicals to vegetation.
    • Patching and sealing berms and pavement; mixing mortar and concrete.
    • Installing and repairing catch basins, stream channels, and other drainage systems.
    • Reshaping and digging ditches/trenches; pouring hot tar.
    • Removing trash and cleaning highways, roadways, and right-of-ways.
    • Mowing grass; moving and loading supplies and materials.
  • Maintain, repair, and install traffic signs and pavement markings on interstate, federal, and state highways.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment (e.g., sharpening, sanding, painting, refueling, lubricating, checking tires, replacing light bulbs, washing equipment).
  • Change tailgates and snowplow blades; conduct pre-trip inspections.
  • Perform miscellaneous labor and bookkeeping tasks, including:
    • Operating two-way radios and base stations.
    • Telephoning crews for emergencies.
    • Cleaning offices and garages.
    • Keeping daily records and logs (e.g., fuel sheets, material check sheets).
    • Responding to public inquiries (e.g., giving directions, explaining traffic delays).
    • Assisting stranded motorists (e.g., telephoning for assistance).
    • Loading and unloading freight; arranging stock in warehouses; moving equipment.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic (addition, subtraction, decimals, percentages, and fractions).
  • Ability to read, write, and speak common English vocabulary.
  • Three months of training or experience in operating basic equipment.
  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement and no airbrake restrictions.
