Temporary Academic Advisor

Temporary assignment from mid-September through mid-December, part-time (20-30 hours/week) and on-site.

About the Role

The Program in Exploratory Studies (PES) at the University of Colorado, Boulder is seeking a Temporary Academic Advisor to build relationships with students and foster success through multidisciplinary academic and developmental advising for exploratory undergraduates across all colleges and schools. This role is part of a collaborative team of academic advisors and coaches.

The Academic Advisor will work with the following populations:

• Current and admitted students in the Program in Exploratory Studies
• Students who were not admitted to their college of choice
• Prospective, international, and transfer students
• Students between colleges or in need of campus-wide exploration

This role focuses on exploration, discovery, and supportive connection with students, requiring specialized knowledge across many fields and a keen understanding of related functional areas. It also involves liaising with individuals and departments across campus, professional growth, and team collaboration.

Responsibilities

Student Support

• Individual and small group advising via scheduled appointments, walk-ins, phone, and email interactions, including proactive outreach to students who have not engaged or are in academic difficulty
• Follow advising protocols and use campus tools such as Buff Portal Advising while maintaining a multidisciplinary knowledge base
• Assist students in planning for and making informed decisions about majors, intended college outcomes, and potential career or graduate school directions
• Help students assess their interests, values, and academic skills
• Teach students to navigate CU Boulder’s systems, academic processes, and policies
• Personalize academic paths, including cocurricular guidance and long-term planning
• Engage with students’ support networks, including parents
• Work with students in group settings through workshops, presentations, and for-credit courses such as FYXP 1000: Academic Exploration & Critical Decision Making and FYXP 1500: First Year Success Seminar

Strategic Forecasting & Student Success Initiatives

• Plan and collaborate with the PES team through regular meetings, trainings, and evaluations
• Participate in targeted meetings with specific constituents and attend broader organizational meetings
• Engage in cross-campus committees

Professional Development

• Pursue professional growth through conferences, mentoring, coursework, workshops, and research

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience working with students in a higher education setting

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in higher education administration or related field
• Experience advising or coaching university students
• Experience working with students outside the classroom
• Experience managing student success initiatives in a higher education setting
• Classroom teaching experience
• Experience working with students on a CU campus

Pay

Hourly pay range: $24–$27.
