About the role

This position is posted to create a pool of candidates. Eligible candidates will be contacted as positions become available at this school.

Responsible for facilitating cross-cultural communication through the process of converting one language into a different language to ensure meaningful and accurate communication between two parties who do not speak the same language.

Responsibilities

  • Provides consecutive interpretation services at one-on-one or small group meetings.
  • Provides simultaneous interpretation service at larger meetings or when requested at small group meetings.
  • Sight translates documents upon request during meetings.
  • Makes phone calls to families who speak languages other than English.
  • Maintains interpreter ethics at all times.
  • Researches relevant issues and technical terms as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university preferred.
  • AACPS Interpreter Training Part 1: Basic Interpreter Skills and Ethics and Part 2 (for work in special education): Interpreting in Special Education Settings required.
  • Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required.
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.

  • Knowledge of school system terminology.
  • Outstanding customer service.
  • Excellent listening, verbal, and written language skills for both English and another language.
  • Ability to accurately interpret conversation and presentation.
  • Knowledge of advanced grammar and usage in both languages.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement in student learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill, and experience to support their child’s education experience.
  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Travel

Travel within the county to different schools is required. Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position. Personal vehicle use may be necessary.
