Telecommunications Systems Technician III

About the Role

The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our team as a Telecommunications Systems Technician III (TST III). This role is ideal for those looking for a challenging opportunity in a high-energy, team-oriented environment focused on emergency management and homeland security.

The TST III responds to and resolves the most critical and complex public safety communications problems for State Agency clients, often serving as the lead over one or more technicians and acting as the area supervisor in their absence. This position requires comprehensive knowledge of public safety communication networks/systems and adherence to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Perform the full range of technician duties to ensure the continued operation of all public safety communication networks/systems and equipment, including the most critical and complex systems.
• Utilize office-provided training, complex test equipment, computers, hand tools, the Telecommunications Division Manual (TDM), and technical literature to troubleshoot and resolve issues.
• Communicate effectively in both written and verbal interactions, frequently collaborating with customers and co-workers to resolve issues.
• In a lead capacity, plan, organize, oversee, and coordinate the work activities of other technicians within an assigned geographic shop or microwave area to ensure quality, quantity, and timeliness standards are met.
• Assist in obtaining the resources required to facilitate proper completion of work and foster communications with individuals, organizations, and other public safety agencies served.
• Maintain a professional and team-centered environment by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
• Work proficiently with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Outlook, and Excel.
• Travel to and work in remote locations, high elevations, and inclement weather conditions as required.

Requirements

• Comprehensive knowledge of all public safety communication networks/systems, including the most critical and complex.
• Valid California Driver’s License (CDL) and participation in the DMV Pull Program.
• Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, especially during emergencies.
• Willingness to travel extensively (weeks to months) with little advance notice and potentially relocate to emergency sites.
• Physical resilience to meet work requirements and a high safety consciousness.

Working Conditions

• Primarily office-based, supporting and managing day-to-day business operations for Cal OES. This is not a hybrid telework position.
• May require working in remote locations, high elevations, and inclement weather conditions.
• In the event of an emergency, employees may be contacted outside of normal working hours and required to report to work, potentially performing duties beyond those specified in the official position description.
