Telecommunications Specialist 2
About the role
This position supports statewide telecommunications systems that serve military facilities and veteran services, with work performed in the field rather than in an office. It requires skill in designing, installing, splicing, testing, and maintaining both copper and fiber systems in a range of environments.
Responsibilities
- Project Leadership: Coordinate telecommunications design, installation, repair, and replacement work across statewide locations
- Infrastructure Design: Develop and plan telecommunications pathways, nodes, and system upgrades for current and future needs
- Site Assessments: Evaluate existing systems to integrate new components and ensure proper function within the broader network
- Field Installation: Install copper and fiber cabling including splicing, testing, and certification in both aerial and underground environments
- Safety and Conditions: Work in bucket trucks and manholes and operate comfortably at heights and in confined spaces
- Maintenance Oversight: Develop and manage preventive maintenance plans for ISP and OSP cabling, equipment, and infrastructure
Requirements
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: One year as a Telecommunications Specialist 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Four years of technical experience providing microcomputer support services that included information technology or telecommunications hardware and software installation, operation, and maintenance within a network environment; or Four years of voice or data telecommunications experience that included two years of system design or configuration and two years of general telecommunications experience that involved: technical management of systems for commercial or governmental applications or technical work in the acquisition, installation, repair, or maintenance of commercial or governmental systems; or Two years of technical experience providing microcomputer support services that included information technology or telecommunications hardware and software installation, operation, and maintenance within a network environment and an associate's degree in Microcomputer or Telecommunications Technology or other closely related field. Post high school training in telecommunications technology; data communications; or electronics with emphasis in telecommunications technology may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the two years of general telecommunications experience, but may not be substituted for the required experience in system design or configuration.
