About the role
The Department of Information Technology (IT) provides learning technologies, strategies, leadership, and support to enhance teaching, learning, the student experience, personal productivity, and administrative effectiveness. IT Converged Network Services is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining various campus telecommunications networks and associated infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Performs inside wiring installations between wiring closets, offices, and classrooms, adhering to Systimax standards.
- Performs outside wiring installations between buildings and/or from a building to an outside location, using outside infrastructure cabling plant via either existing conduit paths or by installing new conduit paths.
- Troubleshoots and repairs blocks, protectors, terminations, etc.
- Diagnoses and repairs problems with phones, wiring, fiber optics and wireless.
- Splices fiber optic cables.
- Affords assistance to network analysts with patching and equipment installation.
- Performs LAN maintenance as required including VLAN changes and participation in large rollouts.
- Coordinates telecommunications and structured cabling systems for campus infrastructure projects and supports other projects.
- Works with campus clients to identify scope of work and resources required for a specific telecommunications project.
- Verifies and ensures the integrity of work performed by vendors and contracted personnel.
- Provides construction coordination for campus infrastructure projects.
- Coordinates the installation of security cameras, digital signage, and card access low voltage equipment across cameras, including the design of the structured cabling used to facilitate the installation of those systems.
- Updates diagrams, floor plans, and other drawings used in coordination, project reviews, and department status meetings.
Qualifications
- Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience.
- Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
- An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Driver License, Valid and in State.
- Strong working knowledge of network architecture, configuration, protocols, interconnectivity requirements, communication transmission technologies and related network and communications related concepts, principles, and techniques.
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate network and communications problems using appropriate test structures and related diagnostics and to perform analysis of network and communications efficiency.
- Strong organizational skills to plan, organize, and manage multiple time sensitive assignments and projects.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to present information to technically diverse audiences in a clear and concise manner.
- Skills in leading the work of others.
- Proficiency in using applicable network and communications equipment, relevant security and system technologies, and software application programs.
- General knowledge of network architecture, configuration, protocols, interconnectivity requirements, communication transmission technologies as well as related networking concepts, principles, and techniques.
- Organizational and time management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize work.
- Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills to gather information from users, communicate technical issues effectively, and draft documentation.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to configure and troubleshoot network and communications system issues.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive data and information.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Analytical skills to think critically to diagnose problems and recommend solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- An understanding of network infrastructure standards and industry best practices.
- Understanding of underground cabling vaults and cabling plants.
- Systimax or BICSI certification.
- Experience working with AutoCAD.
- Experience working in a University setting on a large campus.
- Experience with VoIP in a professional capacity.
- Familiarity with IP Networking concepts including addressing and subnetting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of voice systems design, telecommunications protocols, maintenance and management of telephone systems.
- Substantial knowledge of a wide range of voice and data networking concepts and protocols and methods of linking devices to the voice network.
- Knowledge of copper, coax and fiber cable distribution systems and infrastructure support systems used in voice and data networks.
- Proficiency with job related tools: punch down, butt-set, continuity tester, etc.
- Ability to pull and terminate voice and data wiring in accordance with Systimax standards and crossconnect endpoint connections for the PBX.
