Who You’ll Work With

The Technology Insights Group (TIG) at Bain & Company is a rapidly growing global team of world-class consultants and technologists. We partner with leading Private Equity (PE) investors and their tech-enabled portfolio companies as technical advisors in investment processes. Our work includes product and technology due diligence engagements and value creation assignments, leveraging deep expertise in software and tech-enabled business environments. Projects are delivered by teams combining consultants with former CPOs and CTOs from leading global technology companies, bringing decades of advisory and operational experience. TIG has completed 400+ product and technology diligences and value creation engagements worldwide, supporting clients on high-profile technology investments, including several of the global Top 2024 & 2025 software deals.

About the Role

You’ll join TIG as a Technologist, helping scale a critical capability at Bain. You will work closely with global Tech leadership and regional Private Equity (PE) and General Consulting teams as the experienced technical voice on diligence and value creation engagements. This role offers the opportunity to analyze and evaluate leading tech and tech-enabled companies, gaining exposure to a broad range of technologies, products, industries, and AI innovation. The role is based in the United States, with a preference for candidates located in the Northeast, particularly the Boston or New York areas.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the senior Technologist and a full member of the case leadership team across technology and integrated due diligence (TDD/IDD), post-acquisition (Day 1 and the first 100 days), and value creation plan (VCP) engagements, collaborating closely with the Senior Manager & Operating Partner to drive project deliverables and storyline.
  • Own the “technical answer” and shape executive summary key assumptions and assessments, ensuring an answer-led approach grounded in the investment thesis (for PE) or an operator view (for industry/corporate clients).
  • Validate product capability against the investment thesis; assess technical debt and architecture choices; surface material risks (e.g., cybersecurity); evaluate R&D execution; and translate findings into clear insights on “what it takes” and “how much it will cost.”
  • Serve as the senior technical voice in client calls, management deep dives, and target conversations, maintaining high visibility with both clients and targets. Deep-dive critical technical topics, even outside direct experience, by leveraging the wider technologist group and expert network.
  • Play a key role in winning work by shaping proposals and approaches, and demonstrating technical credibility and “street creds” in client pitches.
  • Demonstrate fluent understanding of software architectures, technology stacks, cloud and mobile computing, technical debt, functional and non-functional roadmaps, hosting, cybersecurity, database technologies, data & analytics (including AI/ML), R&D organization, and AI-enabled software development lifecycle (SDLC), including testing, quality assurance, and CI/CD processes.
  • Apply knowledge of major software business application areas, such as e-Commerce, ERP, CRM, data warehousing, business intelligence, and emerging technologies.
  • Apply the investment thesis to the tech due diligence process, making relevant assessments and recommendations that translate into actionable insights using appropriate methodologies.
  • Contribute to TIG intellectual property and identify new opportunities for technology due diligence and value creation for Bain and its PE clients.
  • Communicate with and educate colleagues at all levels to embed technology expertise across the firm and within client organizations.
  • Coach and mentor junior TIG team members.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three days per week working in person, either at a client location or at your Bain home office.
  • Substantial hands-on experience in commercial software engineering and architecture.
  • Practical understanding of the AI technology landscape, including large language models, AI-assisted development tools, orchestration frameworks, and emerging standards such as Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
  • Direct and recent experience applying AI across the software development lifecycle is preferred, including the use of generative AI and, ideally, agentic AI to improve product development, engineering productivity, platform capabilities, or business processes. A strong data science, machine learning, or AI engineering background may also be considered.
  • 10+ years of industry experience, including at least 3 years in leadership roles.
  • Track record of leading and collaborating on strategic initiatives.
  • Strong team and business communication skills—able to walk through technical approaches with clients or explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with people at all levels and across multi-office/region teams.
  • Must thrive in a fast-paced environment and be able to work independently.
  • Travel is required.
  • Consulting experience and/or hands-on experience with technical due diligence processes is an advantage.
