Technician - Mechanical (Superconducting Magnets)

GE HealthCare · Niskayuna, NY · Today
Information TechnologyFull-time

About the role

The Technology & Innovation Center (HTIC) is GE HealthCare’s global innovation engine, operating through two major hubs (Niskayuna, NY, USA & Bangalore, India) with a highly specialized, multidisciplinary team spanning imaging physics and systems, microelectronics, AI, biosciences, electromagnetics, robotics, materials science, and advanced system engineering. HTIC’s purpose is to drive disruptive innovation that delivers step-change performance improvements in current platforms while pioneering next-generation and cross-segment technologies that lead to new business opportunities. HTIC also proposes and wins external grant awards, typically from the US government (NIH, BARDA, ARPA-H, etc.).

As a Technician in the Superconducting Magnet team at HTIC, you will carry out a broad range of complex engineering assignments supporting the development of novel superconducting magnet prototypes, including magnet coil winding, cold mass build-up, and cryostat assembly. Assignments may include but are not limited to set-up and operation of data acquisition equipment, execution of experiments, troubleshooting of hardware/test systems, documentation and reporting of test results. The Superconducting Magnet Technician also supports compliance and quality activities within the lab and serves as a technical resource for other team members.

Responsibilities

  • Apply initiative and independent judgment to build, evaluate and improve complex magnet assemblies and test setups from conceptual descriptions and ideas.
  • Collaborate with the team to identify potential failure modes in advance and carry out advanced troubleshooting across multiple interacting variables, driving thorough root cause analysis, and lasting solutions.
  • Propose and execute experiments and diagnostic tests to develop conclusions and solutions.
  • Take the lead on hardware evaluations, planning and executing them using knowledge of magnet construction, system operation, and specialized engineering tools, with guidance from engineers and scientists.
  • Communicate recommendations that improve design, manufacturing process, reliability, functionality, serviceability, and workflow, including input on externally sourced components and materials.
  • Own day-to-day operational responsibilities spanning EHS, purchasing, inventory control, workspace organization, documentation, and task prioritization.
  • Work with the management team to lead and deploy technical and EHS training plans, as needed.
  • Comply with EHS regulations and policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or technology related field or Associate's degree with 5 to 7 years' experience in electromagnetic coil or electronics winding (superconducting coils preferred).
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to understand and address root causes of mechanical issues in magnet fabrication in investigational prototypes.
  • Ability to draw accurate conclusions from test data, malfunctions, or deviations, and coordinate implementation of corrections to the existing design or process.
  • High proficiency in interpreting and explaining complex technical information.
  • Adaptable to changes to work priorities and design decisions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both within a collaborative team setting, and independently.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics

  • Hands-on experience in superconducting magnet coil winding, magnet cold mass and cryostat assembly.
  • Hands-on experience in developing instrumentation and data acquisition systems (DAS), such as National Instruments LabVIEW based DAS system.
  • Strong team player who prioritizes collective performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to originate and follow through on ideas.
  • High levels of curiosity and independent thinking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
