About the role
The Technician II - Fiber is responsible for all aspects of Fiber including installing, terminating, testing, and splicing.
Responsibilities
- Cabling & Termination:
- Basic copper termination skills.
- Install work area outlets for floors, modular furniture, and walls (terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks, mount faceplates and surface mount boxes, adhere to IES COMMUNICATIONS labeling standards).
- Build closets (mount and install backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and grounding for racks, equipment, and cable).
- Complete all IDC connections (terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels).
- Perform testing: continuity test horizontal and riser cable, use volt-ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs.
- Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
- Terminate simplex & duplex jumper cords.
- Terminate and breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g., Corning/Commscope, 3DNX).
- Terminate indoor tight buffered multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
- Install fan-out kits including buffer tube.
- Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
- Complete all IES paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, Job Blog, tool transfers, and others as required).
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
- Testing:
- Test using an OTDR and Fluke DTX 180.
- Troubleshoot using an OTDR to identify and correct problems end-to-end and network-wide.
- Splicing:
- Perform mechanical splicing with all types of fiber cable.
- Perform fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
- Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.

- Proficient with required tools.
- Act as Company liaison for customer interface.
- Proven problem-solving and critical thinking skills; ability to read, write, and give oral presentations effectively.
- Able to work at heights, off ladders, and in confined spaces; lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
- Able to stand and walk large job sites regularly.
- Able to see and distinguish colors, read small print, and hear/recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
- Able to travel within the branch or regional territory as needed.
- Regular attendance is mandatory.
- Education, Certification, License, and Skills:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat-cure).
- Testing and troubleshooting experience with MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
- Ability to meet IES driving standards policy.
- Use of trade tools: screwdriver (regular and Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips (with belt sheath), pliers (needle nose and channel locks), hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves, punch tool with 110/66 block blades, 6/8 position combo crimp tool, Krone/3M/BIX.
Qualifications
- 0-2 years of experience.
- Preferred qualifications:
- 5-7 years of experience in Fiber.
- Industry certifications (Corning/FOA).
- Data Center installation experience.
- Mechanical and Fusion Splice experience.
- OSP / Confined Space Entry experience (splicing).
Pay
Minimum USD $24.00/Hr. – Maximum USD $28.00/Hr.
