About the role

IES is a national provider of industrial products and infrastructure services, including electrical, mechanical, and communications contracting solutions for commercial, industrial, residential, and renewable energy markets. As a Technician II - Fiber, you will be responsible for all aspects of fiber installation, termination, testing, and splicing.

Responsibilities

  • Install, terminate, test, and splice fiber optic cables.
  • Basic copper termination skills, including terminating CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks, mounting faceplates, and surface mount boxes while adhering to IES Communications labeling standards.
  • Build closets: mount and install backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware, and grounding for racks, equipment, and cable.
  • Complete all IDC connections (e.g., terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels).
  • Perform testing: continuity test horizontal and riser cable, use volt-ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs.
  • Install LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex & duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and break out outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g., Corning/Commscope, 3DNX).
  • Terminate indoor tight-buffered multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan-out kits, including buffer tubes.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Complete all IES paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, job blogs, and tool transfers.
  • Test using an OTDR and Fluke DTX 180; troubleshoot using an OTDR to identify and correct problems end-to-end and network-wide.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable, including building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.
  • Act as the company liaison for customer representatives.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficient with trade tools: screwdriver (regular and Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips (with belt sheath), pliers (needle nose and channel locks), hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves, punch tool with 110 block and 66 block blade, 6/8 position combo crimp tool, and Krone/3M/BIX.
  • Proficient at terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat-cure).
  • Testing and troubleshooting experience with MMF and SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS).
  • Ability to meet IES driving standards policy.
  • Self-motivated, positive, professional, and able to help create, develop, and implement project process improvements.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and ability to effectively read, write, and give oral presentations.
  • Ability to work at heights, off ladders, and in confined spaces; lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and walk large job sites regularly.
  • Ability to see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
  • Ability to travel within the branch territory and/or regional territory as needed; regular attendance is mandatory.

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of experience in fiber optics.
  • Preferred: 5-7 years of experience in fiber.
  • Preferred: Industry certifications (Corning/FOA).
  • Preferred: Data center installation experience.
  • Preferred: Mechanical and fusion splice experience.
  • Preferred: OSP/Confined Space Entry experience (splicing).

Pay

Minimum USD $25.38/Hr. Maximum USD $33.81/Hr.
