About the Department

The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) is an institution with over 100 years of growth, evolving from a small school of veterinary medicine in 1916 to a major veterinary educational, medical, and research center. Today, we are one of the largest schools of veterinary medicine in the United States, training nearly 600 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students each year. We support collaboration and teamwork to turn discoveries into proactive solutions for animals, humans, and the environment.

About the Role

The Technician I assists in conducting experiments and technical procedures, performs laboratory research activities, and makes and records observations and measurements. This role supports the Principal Investigator (PI), graduate students, and research staff in the laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in conducting experiments and technical procedures.
  • Perform laboratory research activities, including processing samples, culturing and quantifying bacteria, and performing phenotypic and genotypic characterization of bacterial isolates.
  • Conduct literature reviews related to procedures and experiments.
  • Modify procedures to suit research needs.
  • Assist with planning and may supervise technical operations.
  • Assist in making chemical and physical analyses, exercising some ingenuity and improvisation.
  • Use computer equipment for controlling equipment and compiling data.
  • Make and record observations and measurements.
  • Perform daily cleaning, organization, and upkeep of laboratory spaces and equipment to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Update and maintain laboratory inventories, including reagents, supplies, and bacterial stocks.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, calibration, and readiness of laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records.
  • Ensure timely communication and participation in laboratory meetings.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of laboratory or related experience.
