About the role

Installs HVAC and refrigeration systems, including ductwork, control panels, and building pneumatics. Configures and calibrates low ambient systems and direct digital controls to meet operational specifications. Interprets layout plans and schematics to ensure accurate system setup and compliance with building codes. Uses heavy machinery and adheres to OSHA standards and EPA 608 refrigerant handling protocols during all service activities.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and resolves mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant-related issues across commercial and industrial systems.
  • Implements preventive maintenance programs to extend equipment life and minimize downtimes.
  • Maintains and repairs rack systems, walk-ins, reach-ins, and supermarket refrigeration units.
  • Ensures the proper operation of HVAC systems and Energy Management Systems by performing routine checks, identifying issues, and coordinating necessary maintenance or repairs.
  • Conducts inspections and repairs in compliance with federal, state, and local HVAC/R regulations, including cold chain and indoor air quality requirements.
  • Reclaims ozone-depleting refrigerants and ensures proper documentation of refrigerant usage.
  • Leads field teams and mentors less-experienced Technicians and Apprentices on technical procedures and safety practices.
  • Communicates effectively with customers to explain technical issues and service outcomes.
  • Manages escalated service issues and coordinates with external service providers as needed.
  • Drives a company vehicle to complete service calls and manage operational needs within an assigned region.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation to support business-critical needs outside of standard business hours.
  • Coordinates service calls and manages workload using digital tools and scheduling systems.
  • Tracks refrigerant levels, parts inventory, and vendor relationships to ensure resource availability.
  • Submits warranty claims, expense reports, and work orders to support financial sustainability.
  • Maintains company vehicles in accordance with company policies and procedures, including coordinating and transporting vehicles for required maintenance.
  • Safely operates motor vehicles and ensures the vehicle has all required documents, checking fuel, water levels, brake condition, signals, and lights.
  • Submits maintenance invoices for payment and verifies the coverage and validity of vehicle insurance.
  • Wears company uniform and badge in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with management, co-workers, customers, and other business partners to meet business needs.
  • Develops, communicates, and implements processes and practices to meet business needs by analyzing and applying information from multiple sources.
  • Demonstrates, promotes, and supports compliance with company policies, procedures, and standards of ethics and integrity.

Requirements

  • Option 1: Vocational or technical HVAC/R certification and 2 years’ experience in mechanical maintenance or construction-related field for commercial HVAC/R and building controls.
  • Option 2: 4 years’ experience in mechanical maintenance or construction-related field for commercial HVAC/R and building controls or related field.
  • Hold and maintain Type I and Type II or Universal Environmental Protection Agency certification for refrigerant handling.
  • Where required, HVAC-R/Mechanical Journeyman license.
  • Valid state-issued driver’s license and ability to pass motor vehicle report.
  • Commercial driving record with no convictions for DUI, DWI, OUI within the last five (5) years.
  • Commercial driving record with no more than two (2) moving violations in the last three (3) years.
  • No preventable accidents while operating a commercial motor vehicle in the last three (3) years.
  • No serious traffic violations, as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, while operating a commercial motor vehicle in the last three (3) years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a 2-year Vocational or Technical HVAC/R program.
  • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and presentation software (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Mechanical license in city and/or state where job is located.
  • Prior work experience reading blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Prior work experience using hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment.

Pay

The hourly wage range for this position is $29.00 - $58.00. The actual hourly rate will equal or exceed the required minimum wage applicable to the job location. Additional compensation in the form of premiums may be paid in amounts ranging from $0.35 per hour to $3.00 per hour in specific circumstances, based on schedule, facility, season, or specific work performed. Multiple premiums may apply if applicable criteria are met.
