Technical Theater Coordinator
Position Purpose
The Technical Theater Coordinator provides district-wide leadership, coordination, and support for technical theater operations, personnel, facilities, equipment, and educational programming throughout Fargo Public Schools. This position oversees technical theater equipment, inventories, facilities, production support, and technical personnel while ensuring safe, efficient, and educationally focused technical theater operations across the district. This position also provides leadership in long-range planning, student technical theater development, and technical theater best practices.
Responsibilities
Technical Theater Leadership & Coordination
Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 30%- Provide leadership, direction, and support for technical theater operations throughout Fargo Public Schools.
Supervise and coordinate the work of Technical Theater Assistants assigned throughout the district.
Facilitate communication, collaboration, and resource sharing among technical theater personnel.
Serve as the primary technical theater resource for district staff, educators, technicians, and production personnel.
Oversee the coordination of staffing, equipment, and technical resources to support district productions, events, and educational activities.
Develop recommendations related to equipment purchases, facility improvements, staffing needs, and long-range planning.
Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to district and seasonal technical personnel.
- Provide leadership, direction, and support for technical theater operations throughout Fargo Public Schools.
Theater Facility Management, Scheduling, & Operations
Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 20%- Oversee the operation, scheduling, and technical support of Fargo Public Schools theater facilities.
Develop and maintain district-wide theater calendars to ensure the efficient use of facilities, equipment, and technical personnel.
Coordinate theater usage among school productions, curricular activities, district events, community partnerships, and facility rentals.
Establish procedures and priorities for facility scheduling and resource allocation.
Serve as the primary point of coordination for theater operations across district venues.
Ensure theater facilities are safe, functional, organized, and prepared to support educational and performance activities.
Coordinate technical support needs for performances, events, meetings, rentals, and special district functions.
- Oversee the operation, scheduling, and technical support of Fargo Public Schools theater facilities.
Equipment, Inventory & Asset Management
Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 25%- Oversee the maintenance, organization, repair, replacement, and safe operation of technical theater equipment throughout the district.
Develop and maintain accurate inventories of theatrical equipment, tools, scenery, and production assets.
Ensure all theatrical systems, including lighting, audio, rigging, communications, projection, and related equipment, remain in proper working condition.
Create and implement preventative maintenance schedules and long-range equipment replacement plans.
Evaluate equipment needs and develop recommendations for capital purchases and facility improvements.
Oversee the management, allocation, storage, and utilization of shared technical theater equipment and resources across district facilities, productions, and special events.
Assist in the planning and implementation of theater facility upgrades and technical infrastructure improvements.
- Oversee the maintenance, organization, repair, replacement, and safe operation of technical theater equipment throughout the district.
Production Support & Technical Direction
Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 15%- Provide technical leadership and consultation for productions, performances, events, and special projects throughout Fargo Public Schools.
May serve as Technical Director for Trollwood's Mainstage Musical and other assigned productions, providing leadership for production planning, technical execution, scenic construction, staffing coordination, and production operations.
Collaborate with directors, educators, technicians, designers, volunteers, and student crews to support successful productions and events.
Coordinate technical staffing assignments based on production needs, staff expertise, and available resources.
Assist with scenic construction, installation, troubleshooting, and production operations as needed.
Support the planning and execution of district-wide productions, performances, and special events.
- Provide technical leadership and consultation for productions, performances, events, and special projects throughout Fargo Public Schools.
Student Technical Theater Development
Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 5%- Develop and implement a district-wide vision for student technical theater education and workforce development.
Create opportunities for students to gain experience in lighting, sound, scenic construction, stage management, rigging, projections, and other technical theater disciplines.
Establish training standards, safety protocols, and skill-development pathways for student technicians.
Collaborate with educators, directors, and technical staff to support meaningful educational experiences in technical theater.
- Develop and implement a district-wide vision for student technical theater education and workforce development.
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 5%- Ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, industry standards, district policies, and facility requirements.
Develop and enforce safe operating procedures for staff, students, volunteers, and production personnel.
Monitor working conditions in theaters, scene shops, storage areas, and performance venues.
Assist with inspections, maintenance records, and documentation related to theatrical systems and equipment.
Ensure compliance with applicable fire, life-safety, accessibility, and operational regulations related to theater facilities and equipment.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Theater, Theater Production, Theater Design, Arts Management, or a related field.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in technical theater leadership, technical direction, production management, theater operations, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience managing theater facilities, technical systems, equipment inventories, and production resources.
- Experience coordinating multiple facilities, productions, events, and competing priorities simultaneously.
- Experience supervising staff, coordinating work assignments, establishing priorities, and providing leadership to technical theater personnel.
- Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with educators, administrators, artists, technicians, students, and community partners.
- Comprehensive knowledge of theatrical production processes, including scenic construction, lighting systems, sound systems, stage operations, rigging, properties, projections, and backstage operations.
- Working knowledge of theatrical design principles and production planning processes.
- Ability to troubleshoot, maintain, and evaluate theatrical equipment and technical systems.
- Ability to develop long-range plans for equipment replacement, facility improvements, and technical infrastructure needs.
- Knowledge of theater facility operations, scheduling, event coordination, and resource management.
- Experience developing operational procedures and maintaining organized, safe, and functional technical theater spaces.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a driving record acceptable to Fargo Public Schools.
- Ability to operate district vehicles and transport technical theater equipment, materials, and supplies in support of district productions, facilities, and special events.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as assigned.
- Possess good hand-eye coordination for detailed tasks.
- Ability to operate power tools and heavy machinery safely.
