About the role
The Information Technology Intern will support various divisions within the City of Wichita IT Department through a rotational internship. The intern will gain hands-on experience by working across multiple functional teams including Service Desk, Application Development, Application Support, Business Relationship Management, GIS, Data Science, Operations, Network, SCADA and IT Security. Work is reviewed by a full-time staff member, and professional project work is directed and reviewed by staff members in professional exempt roles. This is an educational internship requiring active enrollment in a higher education program throughout the duration of employment. The internship will be on a yearly basis for up to 2 years.
Responsibilities
- Service Desk: Learn first-tier technical support for end users; assist with troubleshooting hardware, software, and network access issues; log and track support tickets and resolutions
- Application Development: Assist in coding, testing, and debugging software; participate in agile development cycles and sprint reviews; assist the development team with documentation and QA tasks
- Application Support: Learn application functionality and user issues; assist with responding to and resolving support tickets; contribute to training guides and knowledge base documentation
- Business Relationship Management (BRM): Collaborate with departments to gather business needs; assist with requirement analysis and project scoping; help evaluate performance metrics of IT solutions
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Assist with collecting, analyzing, and managing geospatial data; support mapping and data visualization tasks; assist with GIS layers and databases
- Data Science: Learn to analyze datasets using tools like SQL, Python, or Excel; assist in creating dashboards and reports; assist in statistical and predictive modeling efforts
- Operations: Learn IT operations including system and server monitoring; assist with asset management, patching, and system administration; learn ITIL-based workflows like change and incident management
- Network Group: Learn configuration and maintenance of network infrastructure; assist with monitoring switches, routers, and firewalls; participate in network documentation and performance analysis
- SCADA: Assist in troubleshooting and maintaining SCADA components; learn security and compliance practices for critical infrastructure systems
- IT Security: Assist with cybersecurity monitoring and incident response tasks; learn vulnerability scanning and remediation tracking; participate in maintaining security policies and awareness initiatives; learn access controls and security configurations on systems and applications; assist on basic audits of user permissions and software compliance; assist with reviewing and applying security patches and updates; document and track security incidents and preventative actions
Qualifications
- Must be in a higher education program
- Must be able to provide a current enrollment schedule each semester
- Valid Kansas Driver's License
