Technical Project Manager
About the role
Structured Communication Systems is seeking a Technical Project Manager (Level II) to join our team in Chicago, Illinois. This position is responsible for managing multiple mid-size IT projects, acting as an escalation point for internal Level I Project Managers, and serving as the primary point of contact for internal teams and technical aspects of assigned projects.
Responsibilities
- Manage multiple mid-size projects ranging in complexity based on business and technical factors.
- Act as an escalation point for internal Level I Project Managers, as directed.
- Apply principles and techniques used in budget management to all assigned projects.
- Identify measures or indicators of project performance and take actions to improve or correct performance.
- Plan, establish, and manage complex IT projects within an agreed scope.
- Serve as the primary point of contact and act as the liaison between internal teams, customers, and the technical aspects of assigned projects.
- Define priorities, document the project scope, objectives, and deliverables.
- Develop and maintain a detailed project plan, scheduling timeline, and budget for all assigned projects.
- Ensure the smooth and timely completion of projects by collaborating and coordinating with internal engineering resources to identify potential risks or unforeseen delays and dependencies, developing response plans, and realigning schedules and expectations as needed.
- Actively participate in creating design alternatives that meet the unique requirements of each customer.
- Ensure that the project meets quality standards and complies with the policies and regulations set by the customer.
- Collect, analyze, and summarize information and trends to prepare project status reports as needed.
- Work with a diverse group of technical staff with varying degrees of technical ability.
- Assist with contract negotiations with consultants, technical personnel, and vendors for services and products.
- Present and/or facilitate project status meetings and communicate project status to key project stakeholders.
- Follow the current policies and procedures for tracking activities in our CRM tool, Salesforce.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Competencies
- Promotes and maintains a high standard of customer service at all times.
- Ability to maintain and continually develop accurate product and application knowledge.
- Ability to simultaneously manage multiple mid-sized projects ranging in complexity and effectively prioritize tasks.
- Strong understanding of project management methodologies, tools, and best practices as defined by PMI.
- Achievement of either a CAPM or PMP certification from PMI is preferred.
- Robust knowledge of IT project management methodologies, tools, and best practices.
- General computer skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Visio, and Project software, and experience using CRM platforms.
- Language skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret quotes and reports. Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university in engineering, project management, or a related field, or 7 - 10 years related experience and/or training.
- Strong knowledge of Project Management Methodology and best practices as defined by PMI.
Physical Requirements

- The office work environment lighting and temperature are generally moderate; work is regularly performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.
- Must have a valid Driver’s License and motor vehicle insurance (at least equal to the state’s minimum coverage requirements), as well as the ability to travel to customer locations and other destinations for short to medium term projects.
- This position occasionally may require an adjusted work schedule and evening hours in order to meet or attend vendor/customer needs.
- Flexibility to field phone calls, pager or system alerts and provide remote and/or on-site support to clients outside of normal business hours, including weekends and holidays.
