Technical Lead Mechanical Engineer - Fitness

About the Role

We are seeking a full-time Technical Lead Mechanical Engineer on our Fitness team at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will serve as a key technical contributor in major product development or mechanical solutions for significant new applications of known technology within the Fitness product segment.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a key contributor in the review of CAD assemblies for technical feasibility and apply experience to risky design aspects of product development
• Explore new technologies, features, and functions; understand and outline the associated challenges and risks
• Utilize advanced testing capabilities and knowledge of materials to customize existing or develop new test methods to substantiate unverified aspects of product designs
• Interpret industry and Garmin product qualification tests and their relevance and impact on product design; share knowledge with mechanical design team members
• Complete estimates on complex and risky mechanical designs including tooling, part cost, and design time
• Negotiate processes, materials, and design feasibility with factory and vendors
• Provide significant contributions to design reviews across multiple product types, offer process improvements, author new procedures, and demonstrate a broad understanding of Garmin’s business model including operations, production, sales, and marketing
• May lead major explorations or product development projects consisting of multiple modules or sub-projects
• Overseas travel as required

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering AND a minimum of 9 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
• Demonstrated strong and effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

Qualifications

• Electronic packaging design experience
• Interest in fitness activities
