Tech Subject Matter Expert
This opportunity resides with Global Security (GS) within HII’s Mission Technologies division. The Global Security group comprises live, virtual, constructive (LVC) solutions; fleet sustainment; nuclear and environmental; and Australia business. As a trusted partner to military customers, HII designs, develops, and operates the largest LVC enterprise that prepares warfighters for cross-domain battle. About the role
This position is for an experienced Auxiliaries systems/equipment mechanic for the COMNAVAIRPAC Carrier Engineering Maintenance Assist Team (CEMAT). The mechanic will serve as the subject matter expert for Galley and Refrigeration equipment, performing comprehensive evaluations and repairs aboard CVNs. Responsibilities include training ship personnel in assessment methods and technical documentation use, as well as verifying installed systems to ensure accurate logistics records. The role is full-time and located in San Diego, CA, with 26–50% required travel.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert in technical specialty for Galley and Refrigeration equipment.
- Conduct material condition assessments, troubleshooting, and repairs on various shipboard equipment.
- Train Ships Force on proper assessment techniques and use of technical documentation such as drawings and manuals.
- Validate equipment installed on CVNs to verify APL accuracy.
- Work directly with customers or customer representatives, attend meetings, and deploy for special projects.
- Manage, oversee, schedule, and assign tasks for one or more jobs.
- Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and integrated systems at customer or field locations.
- Analyze and evaluate product performance and provide technical support.
- Maintain effective customer communications and relations.
- Provide onsite training of customer support personnel as needed.
- Develop and execute work packages in support of government-screened Automated Work Requests (AWRs).
- Identify equipment deficiencies affecting AC&R, thaw, and chill boxes.
Requirements
- High School education, Trade School, or equivalent, with 8 years of related experience, including specific systems expertise.
- Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
- Experience generating Technical Work Documents (MP and FWP).
- Experience assessing, troubleshooting, and repairing shipboard auxiliary equipment, including:
- Galley and sculleries
- Ship’s Laundry
- Water heaters
- Pump alignment
- HPAC compressors
- Waste pollution equipment
- Refrigeration plants onboard CVNs
- Experience conducting pump alignments.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
- EPA Refrigerant Tech Certification (Universal).
- Active DoD SECRET level security clearance.
- Current US passport.
- Ability to obtain and maintain base/ship access.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior US Navy Active-Duty experience with at least one tour onboard a CVN.
- Knowledge of the CEMAT organization.
- Experience working onboard CNAP aircraft carriers stateside and in Japan.
- Experience training sailors on proper system/equipment assessment, troubleshooting, and repair techniques.
- Qualified as a Quality Control Inspector (QCI).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes (minimum 30 lbs).
- Able to work on and climb ladders, in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces.
- Ability to perform duties in high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions, including working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- May require wearing a respirator.
- May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
- Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
Pay
Anticipated salary range: $67,687.00 – $86,829.60.
