Tech Monitor/EMU

About the role

The Monitor/EMU Technician continuously monitors EKG rhythms, recognizes dysrhythmias, and immediately notifies the nurse of pertinent changes in the patient's heart rate and rhythm. They produce rhythm strips for telemetry patients, inventory and maintain equipment for both the main monitor bank and individual patient units, and observe all patients on EMU therapy. The technician identifies different types of seizure activity, documents it, notifies the RN of any seizure activity, and maintains EMU equipment.

Responsibilities

• Continuously monitor EKG rhythms and recognize dysrhythmias.
• Notify the nurse immediately of pertinent changes in the patient's heart rate and rhythm.
• Produce rhythm strips for telemetry patients.
• Inventory and maintain equipment for the main monitor bank and individual patient units.
• Continuously observe all patients on EMU therapy, recognize different types of seizure activity, and document accordingly.
• Notify the RN of any seizure activity.
• Maintain EMU equipment in the EMU room.

Requirements

• GED or High School Diploma.
• Successfully complete an EKG/Dysrhythmia course within 90 days of hire.
• Basic medical terminology knowledge.
• Understanding of standard precautions and recognizing job-related emergencies.
• Awareness of ethical and legal responsibilities related to the job.
• Ability to read EKG arrhythmias.
• Essential knowledge to effectively monitor patients for seizure activity connected to an Epilepsy Monitor (EMU).
• Attend unit-based courses relative to the specialized area within 6 months of hire.

Qualifications

• Preferred Education: PCA, Medic Corpsman, or a nursing student who has completed the first clinical rotation successfully.
• Preferred Experience: One year or more working in a healthcare environment as a monitor technician.
