About the Role

The Emergency Department Technician has the knowledge and ability to perform all duties outlined in the Nursing Assistant job description, in addition to responsibilities unique to the Emergency Department. Major functions include coordination of the clinical care of the patient in collaboration with the Registered Nurse and multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct physical patient care following accepted procedures and in accordance with the department-specific skills checklist.

• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served, including assessing data reflective of the patient’s status.
• Documents accurately, completely, and in a timely fashion in the Electronic Medical Record.
• Identifies the need to reorder supplies and coordinates with the Unit Secretary or Office Manager.
• Ensures all nursing work areas and patient rooms are adequately stocked, including supply and equipment carts.
• Obtains and records patient vital signs and weights as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
• Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, or Physician, applies splints, orthopedic devices, and performs crutch-walking training.
• Monitors and provides care to patients in the Behavioral Health Unit as directed.
• Greets and receives patients at the triage window, assisting the Registered Nurse with patient flow and room placement.
• Identifies changes in patient condition and communicates significant observations to the nurse in a timely fashion.
• Performs 12-lead EKGs and reports findings to the Physician.
• Conducts hourly rounds on assigned patients in collaboration with the Registered Nurse.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living and personal hygiene needs.
• Performs phlebotomy on appropriate patients as delegated by the Registered Nurse after completing phlebotomy training.
• Demonstrates compliance with fall prevention protocols.
• Compiles, secures, and documents patients' personal belongings following established policies and procedures.
• Performs glucose monitoring and documents results in the patient's medical record.
• Ensures patients are accurately identified using the Safety Absolute of Name and Date of Birth.
• Provides a clear and concise handoff to the oncoming staff member at the end of the shift.
• Provides and participates in post-mortem care.
• Applies remote telemetry boxes to patients as directed by the Registered Nurse.
• Assists in the care of patients in restraints as outlined in established policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates safe techniques for ambulation, transfers, and use of assistive devices.
• Assists patients with toileting and elimination; delivers, collects, and empties bedpans, urinals, and bedside commodes.
• Functions independently with treatments, procedures, and equipment within unit-specific departmental competencies.
• Assists the Physician with preparation and setup for suture repair as outlined in departmental policies and procedures.
• Attends 75% of staff meetings annually.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• 1-2 years of related job experience preferred.
• Minimum of a high school diploma or GED; CNA or other certification (e.g., Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, EMT, or Student Nurse who has completed one semester of clinical experience).

Skills

• Able to read, write, and clearly speak the English language.
• Basic clerical and computer skills.
• Experience with medical terminology.
• Knowledge of basic patient care and basic mathematical skills.
• Ability to prioritize and adjust work plans based on patient needs and direction.
• Highly flexible and willing to perform each role as needed and directed.

Physical Demands

• Standing/walking for more than half of the day (sitting for most of the day when working as a monitor tech).
• Frequently bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, and lifting.
• Must be able to push/pull/lift patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds.
• May be exposed to infectious diseases.
• Will be exposed to physical, mental, and emotional illness, as well as end-of-life conditions and death.
• Moderate stress and risk of injury from patient care.
