About The Role

A Tear Down Technician (Disassembly for Estimate Technician) is a specialized role in an auto body shop responsible for completely dismantling the damaged areas of a vehicle before actual structural or cosmetic repairs begin. This position acts as the gateway to the entire repair process, ensuring hidden damage is uncovered immediately to avoid mid-job delays.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Complete Disassembly: Stripping away damaged panels, bumpers, trim, door handles, and interior pieces to expose the vehicle's underlying frame or unibody structure.
  • Blueprinting & Inspection: Working closely with Estimators and Shop Manager to visually map out all broken internal brackets, clips, or structural components. Providing Estimators and Parts Advisors with information regarding any additional parts or repairs that will be required from tear down assessment.
  • Parts & Fastener Cataloging: Organizing, labeling, and placing all reusable and damaged parts onto specialized parts carts so reassembly can happen smoothly without lost hardware.
  • Mechanical Detaching: Carefully disconnecting and capping lines for complex components like cooling systems, radiators, and air conditioning units when working on heavy front-end damage.
  • Prepping for Paint: Removing adjacent components from blend panels so painters have clear access to coat the vehicle without overspray

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare vehicles for body repair work
  • Maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition
  • Wear and maintain all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators
  • Comply with all laws and regulations regarding paints, thinners, and other hazardous materials
  • Cooperate with other personnel to repair and prep vehicles efficiently
  • Operate all tools and equipment safely
  • Understand and comply with federal, state, and local body shop regulations, including OSHA and hazardous waste disposal
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • Previous body repair or auto collision experience preferred
  • Knowledge of repair techniques, tools, and safety equipment
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to work efficiently and meet time standards
  • Professional appearance and positive attitude

Work Environment

Body shop environment with exposure to paints, chemicals, and machinery; requires adherence to safety standards.
