Team Leader - Wholesale Credit Delivery
About the role
This is a player-coach role responsible for leading a team of Underwriting & Portfolio Management teammates while also maintaining and managing a portfolio of client relationships. The role balances direct portfolio management activities with leadership, coaching, and oversight of the assigned underwriting and portfolio management team.
Responsibilities
- Lead a team of 10–17 Underwriting & Portfolio Management teammates to deliver quality credit analysis and underwriting of credit transactions.
- Manage the most complex and largest credit relationships, including clients with capital markets and specialized industry needs, as well as specialty structural considerations.
- Ensure the development and retention of engaged, industry-leading teammates through regular 1:1 conversations, training, coaching, mentoring, and inspection.
- Demonstrate leadership in developing and enhancing strong partnerships with key stakeholders across the organization.
- Support revenue and return growth objectives by identifying, screening, prioritizing, and consistently underwriting opportunities in partnership with stakeholders.
- Oversee all underwriting activity in the portfolio and influence client acquisition decisions by actively participating in screen meetings.
- Maintain a portfolio of client relationships as the primary Credit Delivery partner, providing credit expertise, transaction structuring guidance, portfolio oversight, and risk management leadership.
- Balance individual portfolio responsibilities with team leadership, coaching, talent development, and execution of team objectives.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, partnering closely with Investment Banking peers to deliver complex financing solutions through an industry-specific lens.
- Maintain extensive knowledge of corporate banking, investment banking, commercial banking solutions, market trends, and business drivers.
- Understand and articulate industry trends, economic patterns, and their implications, proactively sharing information across the PM organization.
- Own Capital Management meetings and serve as the primary point person for providing updates and guidance on portfolio issues and trends.
- Work closely with Relationship Partners and Credit Risk Managers to proactively manage the portfolio and identify industry trends.
- Manage all internal and external portfolio reviews, including Credit Review, Internal Audit, SNC, and FRB exams.
- Ensure on-time performance of portfolio management practices, such as annual reviews, financial spreads, and compliance reviews.
- Lead ad hoc projects related to regulatory, risk, and compliance issues.
Qualifications
- Required:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 10+ years of experience in underwriting, portfolio administration, and commercial loan credit decision-making.
- 3+ years of previous management experience.
- Subject-matter-expert level understanding of accounting and finance, financial statement analysis, and cash flow analysis.
- Mastery-level proficiency with MS Office Desktop applications.
- Strong interpersonal skills and solid written/verbal communication.
- Preferred:
- Management/leadership experience in Commercial Banking portfolio management.
- Mastery of Truist Bank operating systems, including COMPASS and other Commercial applications (e.g., MRA, Salesforce.com, nCino).
- Demonstrated expertise in Government Entity finance, including experience underwriting, structuring, and managing credit relationships involving state and local governments, public sector entities, essential-purpose financings, and related governmental credit structures.
