About the Role

This position assists the Store Manager and Assistant Store Manager with operational, sales, and merchandising objectives by providing outstanding customer service. Responsibilities include promoting a safe and productive work environment, training Team Members on policies and procedures, and supporting selling initiatives (TEAM): Thank the Customer, Engage with the customer and/or pet, Advise products or services, and Make it Memorable.

Responsibilities

  • Execute assigned basic, promotional, and seasonal merchandising activities.
  • Perform Opening/Closing procedures and transport deposits to the bank.
  • Assess store conditions, assign duties, and organize workflow using the daily planner.
  • Recovery of merchandise and participation in the freight process.
  • Perform regular and promotional price change activities.
  • Execute Plan-o-gram procedures (merchandising, sets, and resets).
  • Order live goods and store supplies in the absence of the Store Manager or Assistant Store Manager.
  • Resolve customer complaints/issues to ensure a positive experience.
  • Adhere to loss prevention standards and respond to alarm calls as needed.
  • Communicate with Team Members on job functions, responsibilities, and financial goals.
  • Operate cash register, supervise cash handling procedures, and reconcile cash drawers and vault daily.
  • Assist Team Members on the appropriate application of policies and procedures.
  • Assemble merchandise and assist customers with loading purchases.
  • Perform janitorial duties and ensure the safety and well-being of live animals.
  • Sanitize and maintain holding tanks and care for live animals, including handling food, bedding, and habitat.
  • Assist in training new Team Members and complete all associated documentation.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance, with flexibility to work varied hours, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.

Requirements

  • Retail experience and/or pet/live animal knowledge is strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to read, write, and count accurately.

Preferred Skills

  • Pet/live animal, pet food, and pet product knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to resolve issues ethically with minimal conflict.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to perform principle responsibilities of Team Members.

Working Conditions

Working environment is generally indoors with moderate noise. Floors and outdoor lots are typically hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt). Lighting and temperature are adequate. Work shifts vary but are generally no less than 4 hours and may exceed 10 hours.

Physical Requirements

  • Non-sedentary role requiring physical and mental stamina to move quickly and safely throughout the store and outdoor areas.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or reach merchandise overhead.
  • Ability to frequently stand, kneel, twist, crouch, squat, bend, stoop, and climb ladders.
  • Ability to move throughout the store for an entire shift.
  • Ability to safely access all areas of the store, including selling floor, side lot, stock area, and register area.
  • Ability to constantly operate store equipment such as computers and cash registers.
  • Ability to read, write, and count accurately for documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to process information through the point-of-sale system.
  • Ability to handle and be in contact with birds/poultry.
  • Ability to move and transfer live animals, equipment, and merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to push and pull merchandise up to 2,000 pounds with proper material handling equipment (e.g., pallet jack, dolly, or U-boat).
  • Ability to complete all required training and certification.
  • Ability to travel as required in support of district needs and drive or operate a vehicle for business needs.
