Team Lead Blood Operations

About the Role

Accountable for the on-time delivery of own work and that of others. Responsible for direct coaching and oversight of staff assigned for the day, quality assurance of team deliverables, and serving as a subject matter expert in phlebotomy, blood product collection, and compliance requirements. Consistently enhances existing services, influences action plans, and ensures a customer-focused approach. Analyzes customer information systematically and collaborates across departments to achieve organizational goals. Fosters teamwork, monitors team progress, and supports others in achieving objectives. Works on diverse problems, selects appropriate methods for solutions, and proactively solves issues to drive informed decisions.

Responsibilities

• Understand and perform all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements.

• Lead the donor collection team, address issues from Donor Specialists, provide feedback, and follow through with team members and supervisors.
• Deliver customer service excellence to donors and enhance the donation experience through professional relationship building.
• Establish and build relationships with donors and sponsors.
• Resolve customer issues with potential negative impact and inform supervisors or managers.
• Influence future blood drives through consistent conversion rates, rebooking, sponsor leadership, and service recovery.
• Train and mentor team members in all aspects of the role.
• Prepare collection sites, including technology systems and quality control; troubleshoot and adjust as needed; plan for future site visits.
• Perform donor screening (collect donor histories) and mini-physical.
• Perform phlebotomy, including automation (Alyx and/or Trima).
• Prepare and pack units for transport.
• Observe donors for reactions, manage automation reactions, address donor needs, de-escalate situations, prevent reactions, and mitigate issues.
• Rebook donors for future donation appointments and facilitate the rebooking process.
• Transport or carpool staff; may transport supplies and equipment.
• With a valid CLD, operate mobile drive buses following all DOT guidelines to safely transport staff, supplies, and equipment and arrive on time.
• Lead drive set-up and create a safe environment for donors and staff.
• Achieve team automation goals, including recruiting and converting donors for automation.
• Operate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on equipment.
• Maintain product integrity and ensure proper identification of all donors.
• Maintain organization of departmental records as needed.
• Participate in validation of new processes or equipment.
• Review daily work for accuracy, investigate discrepancies, and resolve where appropriate.
• Review quality results, escalate issues, and perform root cause analysis with leadership.
• Use SOS to troubleshoot.
• Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1–3 years of relevant experience required; 3 or more years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
• A combination of a healthcare degree and certification may substitute for experience.
• Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of job-related experience.

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as Standard Operating Procedures, safety rules, and operating instructions.
• Basic mathematical aptitude.
• Ability to apply judgment to written or oral instructions and organize work for productive workflow.

• Strong attention to detail and good communication skills, including providing constructive criticism.
• Legible handwriting.
• Ability to learn and utilize computer applications such as Ceridian, Hemasphere, Oracle, and HemaTerra.

• Screening equipment: Lancet, Sphygmomanometer (BP cuff), Temperature probe, Hemoglobin analyzer.
• Phlebotomy collection equipment: Blood mixer, Trima, Alyx.
