About the role

The Department of History seeks a Teaching Associate to support faculty instruction and student learning in undergraduate courses. The Teaching Associate will assist primary instructors with grading, leading discussion sections, holding office hours, and providing academic support to students.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and prepare four discussion sections per semester, serving approximately 1525 students per section.
  • Read assigned course materials and consult with course instructors regarding learning objectives and discussion goals.
  • Facilitate engaging and productive classroom discussions that support student learning and participation.
  • Grade quizzes, examinations, and written assignments for one to two courses per semester, providing timely and constructive feedback to students.
  • Attend lectures two to three times per week to remain current with course content and expectations.
  • Meet regularly with instructors to clarify course objectives and key concepts for which students will be responsible.
  • Hold approximately three office hours per week, with additional availability as needed.
  • Aid students by answering questions, clarifying course material, supporting assignment preparation, and helping students strengthen their analytical thinking and writing skills.
  • Provide guidance and support to Graduate Student Teaching Fellows and participate in pedagogy training sessions when scheduled.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree required. Degree in History or a closely related field.
  • One to three years of relevant teaching, instructional, mentoring, or academic support experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex historical concepts effectively to undergraduate students.
  • Strong organizational, grading, and student support skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, teaching fellows, and students in a diverse academic environment.

Qualifications

This is a nine-month appointment with eligibility for regular Boston University benefits. Reappointment for an additional year may be possible based on departmental enrollment needs, funding availability, and satisfactory performance.

Pay

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training and internal pay comparison.

Schedule

This is a nine-month appointment involving four discussion sections per semester.
