About the Role
Woodbrook Elementary School is seeking a Teaching Assistant for the 2026-27 school year to support K-1st grade classrooms. Responsibilities
- Carry out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher and, if applicable, the student's Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
- Develop and maintain a pleasant and orderly classroom environment, including managing instructional materials, designing bulletin boards, and assisting with cleanup activities.
- Support the classroom teacher in maintaining appropriate behavior and discipline among students.
- Operate audio-visual equipment and assist students with learning tasks assigned by the teacher.
- Accompany students during field trips, library visits, assemblies, and transitions between learning environments.
- Perform clerical duties such as attendance recording, collecting lunch monies, typing, filing, and duplicating materials.
- Supervise students during lunch, free time, and other non-instructional periods.
- Maintain student records under the supervision of the classroom teacher or principal.
- Assist with personal care tasks, including toileting, feeding, positioning, and medical-related duties (e.g., catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, assistive breathing devices, colostomy/ileostomy care).
- Support carry-over of related services such as Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech, Adapted Physical Education, and Vision.
- Participate in team meetings and perform other duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or principal.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Willingness to seek and maintain CPR certification.
- Ability to develop empathetic relationships with students, including those with disabilities.
- Willingness to learn specialized instructional and management techniques for disabled students.
- Strong communication skills and ability to build effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff.
- Basic keyboard and filing skills.
Working Conditions
- Duties are performed in various school settings, including classrooms, gyms, cafeterias, auditoriums, and recreational areas.
- Frequent walking, standing, and light lifting (up to 40 pounds) are required.
- Occasional travel with students on field trips and movement of students using wheelchairs or other mechanical devices may be necessary.
- Occasional lifting of equipment, such as audio-visual materials weighing up to 50 pounds, may be required.
- Attendance at parent conferences, meetings, and training sessions beyond normal hours may be necessary.
- Daily close contact with children to support classroom management and learning environments.
- Regular interaction with staff, parents, medical professionals, and community members, requiring tact and diplomacy.
