Teacher - Special Education, Educational Resource Classroom (Temporary)

Temporary contract for the 2026-2027 school year (183 contract days, 1.00 FTE).

Qualifications

• State of Oregon Teaching License with Special Education endorsement
• Current First Aid Card

Pay

Annual salary range: $49,893 – $103,684 (based on a 195/196-day contract). Initial placement on the salary schedule is determined by education and contracted licensed experience. Salary and stipends will be prorated based on FTE and start/end dates of the position.

• Eligible for a specialty stipend of $2,836 for the 2026-2027 school year
• Eligible for an additional $1,906 stipend if certified multilingual in Spanish, Arabic, Ukrainian, American Sign Language, or Russian (must pass a standardized proficiency test)

About the Role

The Special Education Teacher facilitates student success in the least restrictive environment by implementing district-approved curriculum and addressing academic, interpersonal/social, self-management, and daily living skills. The role ensures access to the general education curriculum and non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible.

Responsibilities

• Instruct students with individualized special needs to develop academic, interpersonal, self-management, and daily living skills (e.g., toileting/hygiene)
• Manage classroom and individual student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment
• Prepare teaching materials and reports, including Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), grades, attendance records, anecdotal records, and progress reports
• Assess students for eligibility into special education and evaluate their social (e.g., behavioral, motor development, communication) and academic needs (e.g., developmental level, vocational abilities)
• Collaborate with school personnel and community agencies (e.g., social service agencies, caretakers) to develop and modify programs, plan curriculum, and maximize student outcomes
• Direct instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student aides to address individual student needs
• Adapt lessons to implement IEP goals and meet the special needs of students
• Advise parents and/or legal guardians on student progress, expectations, and methods for improvement
• Facilitate special education meetings for students with or suspected of having disabilities
• Ensure compliance with required timelines, processes, procedures, documentation, and student record requirements per district policy and state law
• Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety and adhere to policies
• Ensure student confidentiality in verbal, written, electronic, and filing/organizational strategies
• Maintain prompt and regular attendance

Other Duties

• Administer medication, first aid, and/or health care as required for student medical conditions
• Assist other personnel to support their work activities
• Participate in meetings (e.g., parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings) to receive/provide information and meet credential requirements

Requirements

• Knowledge of current federal and state laws pertaining to special education
• Skills to motivate students, communicate with diverse backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance, and address student health care needs
• Ability to work with all special education eligibilities (e.g., learning, communication, visual, physical disabilities) and apply age-appropriate teaching methods
• Ability to stand/walk for prolonged periods, perform specialized tasks, maintain records, and meet deadlines under stressful conditions
• Model appropriate school behavior and communicate effectively
• Physical abilities include lifting/carrying/transferring immobile students, physical interventions, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, and visual/hearing acuity

Licenses & Certifications

• Teaching Credential for Special Education (appropriate level of instruction) and No Child Left Behind Highly Qualified status
• First Aid/CPR certification
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
